Proposed changes to semi finals
Along with SA teams in Europe and other nonsense, Premiership Rugby is now considering staging the semi-finals as a double header. The French do it and Simon Massie-Taylor says he's looking at ways to grow the game and staging big events like this might be the answer. This, of course, would remove any incentive to finish in the top two as no team would have home advantage (theoretically). Source: Alex Lowe The Times 08/06/22

Re: Proposed changes to semi finals
What a dumb idea lol
France has countless big stadiums to move around.
Reality is this will just be Old Trafford and Twickenham.
What benefit would it bring say tigers?
How about the RFU move the England games around first before messing about with the clubs

Accountants will ruin sport. Same happening in Dublin this weekend with the GAA football making fans travel to rip off Dublin before they should need to.
Unfair on the successful season Tigers will have had for the local economy as well, as it would not get the boost of a big semi the team have earned for us. Also create even more dead rubbers late on in the season.

Totally agree this is all about the organising bodies getting a bigger slice of the pieMayocaz wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 1:06 pm Accountants will ruin sport. Same happening in Dublin this weekend with the GAA football making fans travel to rip off Dublin before they should need to.

Fully agree, this stinks of the RFU looking to use this as another Twickenham Cash Cow day, another chance to fleece the fans and the local economies of much needed funds.Rugbygramps wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 1:09 pmTotally agree this is all about the organising bodies getting a bigger slice of the pieMayocaz wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 1:06 pm Accountants will ruin sport. Just nonsense.
To win is not as important as playing with style!

Re: Proposed changes to semi finals
Hopefully this idea will bite the dust, even thinking it illustrates the contempt that so many of the suits have for the ordinary fan who actually pays to attend matches, if it is agreed by the clubs the season ticket holders and supporters must hold their Board members to account and expect them to justify their decision.
Re: Proposed changes to semi finals
Can anyone imagine Twickenham railway station with 50,000+ fans looking to leave the first semi-final at the same time as 50,000 fans are trying to arrive for the second semi-final??
That would be genuinely dangerous.

Re: Proposed changes to semi finals
How does it being at Twickenham grow the game anyway. I could sort of understand if it was played an area lacking in top level rugby but how does playing a match at Twickenham help spread the word. What is does is fund the RFU also help the London area clubs who struggle to attract a significant crowd without the cudos of a bit of a olly to Twickers.
Re: Proposed changes to semi finals
Here's a novel idea. Lets declare the team that finishes top at the end of the season as champions.
I'm not cynical just experienced

Re: Proposed changes to semi finals
Emailed PRL yesterday regarding having Trophy awarded to Club finishing top of League. Recieved reply today
Hope all is well. Thank you for your email. We do appreciate you dropping us a line with your thoughts.
Gallagher Premiership Rugby is one continuous competition … league phase, semi-finals and a final.
We don’t have play-offs but rather one continuous competition.
I do understand the point you make but there are no plans to change the structure or award different trophies.
That would of course be a decision for our clubs if any change was made.
Kind Regards
Paul
Interesting maybe all Clubs should ask for Trophy for League winners or is it only us fans that feel the need?

PRL or RFU who is the more clueless organisation....discuss....

Re: Proposed changes to semi finals
Profiteering under the guise of 'growing the game'. Cynical
Re: Proposed changes to semi finals
You will recall that when playoffs were introduced mid season they did award a second trophy to the team ending top of the table for that year only.
Not calling the playoffs 'playoffs' is a bit like the renaming of the windfall tax as a levy, a load of old.......
In addition to the extra revenue in the end I came around to the view that the playoffs are on balance a good thing in that they 'level up' teams which have suffered due to international call ups. That said, playing for a home advantage in the semis is an important part of the excitement at the season end and as such should remain. I can't see the clubs agreeing to a London Fest as an alternative (London based clubs excluded).

Life can be unpredictable, so eat your pudding first!
Re: Proposed changes to semi finals
So there would be no financial benefit for any club reaching the semi final as all proceeds would go to funding the prawn sandwich brigade at Twickenham. Brilliant idea !
