Heineken Champions Cup 2021-2022 - Draw done!!!
Some interesting possible opponents - Racing 92, 4 Union Bordeaux-Bègles, 5 ASM Clermont Auvergne, 6 Stade Français Paris, 3 Ulster Rugby, 4 Connacht Rugby, 5 Scarlets, 6 Ospreys, - 4 matches against 2 of the above on a home and away basis, then top 8 from each league into the round of 16 on a home and away knock out basis. Doesn't say anything about what happens if you don't qualify for the round of 16 but expect you will drop down into the other cup
Hehehehehehehehe

Why 4 matches against 2 teams? Why not 4 matches against 4 different teams with 2 at home and 2 away if it's 2 league's of 12?trendylfj wrote: ↑Mon Jun 28, 2021 12:18 pm Some interesting possible opponents - Racing 92, 4 Union Bordeaux-Bègles, 5 ASM Clermont Auvergne, 6 Stade Français Paris, 3 Ulster Rugby, 4 Connacht Rugby, 5 Scarlets, 6 Ospreys, - 4 matches against 2 of the above on a home and away basis, then top 8 from each league into the round of 16 on a home and away knock out basis. 2021/2022 Heineken Champions' Cup format has been announced and it seems that Tigers will be in Tier 3.

It’s a curious arrangement - no chance of Tigers getting to play a Tier 1 side until last 16, but play two Tier 2 sides.
It’s not clear if the pool draw is done in such a way as to mean English sides have to play one from each of Pro14 and Top14 - it doesn’t say anything about this, so I assume it’s random, in which case we will play two from:
Ulster
Connaught
Racing
Bordeaux

Re: heineken possible opponents
And I think that you will find that we will not be playing Clermont, SF, Scarlets or Ospreys. We are in Tier 3 and as such will be playing teams in Tier 2 - Racing, Bordeaux, Ulster and Connacht. It isn't implicitly stated in the press release, but I'm sure that it is meant to be Tier 1 teams playing Tier 4 teams and Tier 2 against Tier 3, same principle as the Premiership play-offs.trendylfj wrote: ↑Mon Jun 28, 2021 1:27 pmyou may be correct having read it again - need to go back to schoolScott1 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 28, 2021 12:51 pmWhy 4 matches against 2 teams? The other thing to note is that with 8 from 12 in the pool qualifying, although we get fewer pool matches (4 instead of 6), getting through to the knockout phase should be considerably easier than in the old format.
Maybe not so much if we draw Racing and Bordeaux, I’d admit!

We can't draw both Racing and Bordeauxchris111 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 28, 2021 1:54 pm The other thing to note is that with 8 from 12 in the pool qualifying, although we get fewer pool matches (4 instead of 6), getting through to the knockout phase should be considerably easier than in the old format.

Or not as I read it. Each tier has 2 teams in it per league. So given there's two pools one pool will have one French team and the other will have the other
So Pool A will have one French Tier 2 team
Pool B will have the other French Tier 2 team
So we will have one French team & one Pro14 team, based on the tier system
One of the teams will be Ulster or Connacht and the other will be Bordeaux or Racing.
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.
Re: Heineken Champions Cup 2021-2022 - possible opponents
Guess it could also include the other tier 4 sides - Ospreys or Scarlets and Stade & Clermont?
Less is more....
Re: Heineken Champions Cup 2021-2022 - possible opponents
So do we play two teams both home away or 4 teams once with two games at home and two away?

No we're tier 3, our 4 games will be against the non prem tier 2 teams in our group. Tier 4 teams only play tier 1 teams, so us finishing 6th rather than 7th has given us a much better chance of progression.

It’s all very difficult to understand till the draw.

Re: Heineken Champions Cup 2021-2022 - possible opponents
2 teams home and away. IF I'm reading it right.
Their are 2 groups
Each group will have one team from each league and tier. (ie us and Saints are the two Tier 3 teams from the Prem, so if we are in Group A, Saints WILL be in group B)
That means each group has 12 teams
3 Tier 1
3 Tier 2
3 Tier 3
3 Tier 4
Tier 1 play Tier 4
Tier 2 play Tier 3
So you never play a team in your Tier OR your League.
So us being in Tier 3 means we will play 2 teams one from Pro14 & one from France. Those teams will both be Tier 2 teams.
So we will play one of Connacht or Ulster, Home and Away.
& we play one of Racing or Bordeaux, Home and Away.
At least that's my understanding

Re: Heineken Champions Cup 2021-2022 - possible opponents
It’s a ridiculous way of doing it if that’s the case! It would be much better to play all 4 teams in the other tier once, two games at home two games away.

Re: Heineken Champions Cup 2021-2022 - possible opponents
Yes, I think you’ve nailed it. Whoever Tigers draw from those options, they should be a decent bet for a last 16 play-off. Assuming the three Tier 4 teams in our pool get a hammering from their games against Tier 1 (Wasps v (say) Leinster and Stade Toulousain could get very ugly for our friends down the road!), then it’s effectively 5 out of the 6 Tiers 2 & 3 teams going through.TigerFeetSteve wrote: ↑Mon Jun 28, 2021 4:11 pm2 teams home and away.
