Apples and oranges
Hartley had been warned earlier in the match about making comments that could be considered to be aimed at the ref. So not heat of the moment - just dumb.
Glad to see a bit of common sense being used in the end.
Like the suggestion of Marler buying Lee a beer! All in all probably the best way to settle it rather than letting the profesional complainers cloud the issue by wheeling out their soapboxes and spoiling rational dialogue.

No! He said that to Tom Youngs..........ellis9 wrote:Did Dylan Hartley not call Wayne Barnes a :censored: cheat in the heat of the moment?!
Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.

Tyzot, yes Hartley was warned and then got punished in the form of a red card and then faced further punishment afterwards and rightly so. Is that not similar to Marler?

But equally people shouldn't have to tippy toe around for fear of upsetting somebody's hair trigger sensitivities, especially when they take it upon themselves to be sensitive on somebody else's behalf and even go out of their way to do so. Some of the claims to offence really are ridiculous in any instance.biffer wrote:I understand that, the difficulty is that everyone's line can be in a different place, and those lines are arbitrary, not absolute. When they're arbitrary, they can be moved, and when there's a lot of movement it can lead on to other societal behaviours which can result in oppression. I'm not for a second saying that will automatically happen, it's a huge mish mash of influences and pressures, but the use of language is one of those and it's why there has to be some care and thought about what is acceptable and what isn't, and why the level of what's acceptable depends very much on the platform and exposure of any particular instance.h's dad wrote: Sorry biffer but I really do believe there is an acceptable line. Baa baa black sheep is one side of the line and the holocaust is on the other. I do understand that some want to lump them together but they are nutters (in my opinion) whatever their race.

ellis9 Your point was that both were heat of the moment. If earlier in the game Marler had been warned about using that sort of description to a player then the cases would have been similar - but he was not and so they were not similar.

Looks like the virtue signallers on here have got it wrong.

So it's ok to call someone a Blazer

Careful LE18, you get deleted for suggesting that double standards may be in play.LE18 wrote:So it's ok to call someone a Blazer
Does anybody else think that EJ's earlier incitement to 'smash the Italians' was more offensive than Marler's comment for which (presumably) EJ made Marler apologise?

For EJ to make Job Marler apologise was just criminal...Does anybody else think that EJ's earlier incitement to 'smash the Italians' was more offensive than Marler's comment for which (presumably) EJ made Marler apologise?

When you're accustomed to privilege equality seems like oppression.Skin_and_Muscle wrote:It must be an awful existence, constantly moaning about having to be respectful and polite. Sorry, 'smack' them, give them 'good hiding', be 'brutal' and 'leave none standing'.The Boy Dave wrote:For EJ to make Job Marler apologise was just criminal...Does anybody else think that EJ's earlier incitement to 'smash the Italians' was more offensive than Marler's comment for which (presumably) EJ made Marler apologise?
