How to end kick tennis
We all think the current kicking game is negative and not good for the fans.
All that really needs to change is that you can no longer be played onside by the opposition running the ball back. Simple quick fix.
Any player offside must retreat until played onside by one of their own team.

Re: How to end kick tennis
we often see a kicker or chaser taken out by a "static" player from the receiving team, they need to be really harsh on that if you change that law as its always cynical but rarely called, penalty to the kicking team where the ball landed or was caughtmol2 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 8:35 pm We all think the current kicking game is negative and not good for the fans.

Not everybody. As a former fly half, I really appreciate such kickings exchanges.
Only when it goes on for too long (>10 kicks or so) does it get somewhat tedious for me.

Re: How to end kick tennis
I don’t have a problem with the kicking, just the lack of any way of ending it if the players are not required to retreat when ahead of the kicker.
Re: How to end kick tennis
Must be a downside to your suggestion?

Agree with mol2
Yet another law that was changed, to the detriment of the game
It used to be when the ball is kicked anyone in front of the kicker must retreat until put onside by the kicker or someone behind..
… this not only creates space for a runner in broken field choosing to counter attack but also space in the backfield to kick into and create an attacking position.. either way kick ping pong should be drastically reduce.
Why or when this law was changed god only knows .. well maybe the idiots in the IRB who I can only assume from their continued folly, have never played the game.
Put It back to what it was, along with all the other stupid law changes they made in the last 30 years that have led to the ruination of a once wonderful game

Re: How to end kick tennis
Tactical kicking has always been a part of the game and should be. The problem has been pointed out is that players in front of the kicker are allowed to stand still until put onside by the receiver running 5 metres forward. One way to deal with the problem would be to say that any player in front of the kicker must either run 10 metres towards their own try line or stand still until the kicker runs past them to be put onside.

I don't think it changed, just France decided to let a referee join their coaching staff to find ways to reinterpret the laws.mightymouse wrote: ↑Tue Feb 20, 2024 4:40 pm Agree with mol2

Law 10 , 4c
An offside player may be penalised, if that player:
Was in front of a team-mate who kicked the ball and fails to retire immediately behind an onside team-mate or an imaginary line across the field 10 metres on that player’s side from where the ball is caught or lands, even if it hits a goal post or crossbar first. [/u]If this involves more than one player, then the player closest to where the ball lands or is caught is the one penalised. This is known as the 10-metre law and still applies if the ball touches or is played by an opponent but not when the kick is charged down.
Sanction: The non-offending team can choose either:
Penalty at the place of infringement; or
Scrum where the offending team last played the ball.

Re: How to end kick tennis
The problem is that no player who is in front of the kicker at the moment the ball is kicked can be certain of where the ball will land or be caught therefore all players must at least start to retire - standing still should not be an option.Hot_Charlie wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 2:15 pmAnd the bold bit is the Dupont/Garces loophole.GETHIN EXILE wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 10:22 am Law 10 , 4c

Re: How to end kick tennis
Where do the laws say you are layer on side by the opposition running the ball 5m?
Re: How to end kick tennis
Other than under Law 10.4c, an offside player can be put onside when:
An onside team-mate of that player moves past the offside player and is within or has re-entered the playing area.
An opponent of that player:
Carries the ball five metres; or
Passes the ball; or
Kicks the ball; or
Intentionally touches the ball without gaining possession of it.
