Next season Champions Cup - 2023/2024

Post by TigerFeetSteve »

Right so this is my understanding for next season’s Champions Cup

Premiership (confirmed)
Tier 1: Sale, Saracens
Tier 2: Tigers, Saints
Tier 3: London Irish, Quins
Tier 4: Exeter, Bath

URC - a bit more confusing due to the upsets in seedings, had the knockouts gone to seedings, however I think only the finalists move up so even though Connacht beat Ulster to make the semi's they drop back to table position apart from finalists
Tier 1: Munster, Stormers
Tier 2: Leinster, Ulster
Tier 3: Glasgow, Bulls
Tier 4: Connacht, Sharks

Top 14
Not yet finished

So we are in Tier 2, so our opponents are one of Tier 3.

So we will either have Glasgow or Bulls next year in the groups

Then IF the top 14 stays as is for the table AND no upsets in the knockouts it's one of Bordeaux or Lyon, but that is VERY open to change
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

Who knows at this stage. All the noise was that they're gonna drop the two megapool format.

No they confirmed that for next season, it's the one after they are talking about dropping it.

Next season 100% is same format as this year

There are articles from the end of March that say the format could change ahead of the 23/24 season

Cardiff get in ahead of the Sharks by dint of topping the Welsh conference.

The URC has 4 conferences (but a global table), play in-conference home and away, and everyone else home or away.

Doesn't seem balanced to me that it's the same number of qualifiers from the 16-team URC and the 11-team Prem.

I may be wrong, but I thought this season was the first that a Welsh side didn't have a ensured place in the Champions Cup?

I could be wrong but my impression was that conference toppers getting a spot is ending next season.

Certainly all the talk has been that the Sharks have missed out.

Details of next season's format, which will likely change again for 24/25.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/rugby-union ... xt-season/

4 pools of 6.

2 teams from each league per pool. You don't play the team from your own league. Only 4 pool matches.

Top 4 from each pool go into a straight R16 knockout format.

4 teams drop into a revamped Challenge Cup. (3 pools of 8 >>> 12+4 R16)

Number of teams in the top competition could be reduced the following year, with another reference to a 10-team Premiership.

https://www.epcrugby.com/2023/06/14/202 ... announced/

4 pools of 6.
2 clubs from each league

DO NOT play the other team from your league

Only 4 seeds

Saracens (Prem winners)
Munster (URC winners)
La Rochelle (Champions Cup winners)
Toulouse/Leinster (either as Top 14 winners or if La Rochelle do the double, La Rochelle become top 14 seed & Leinster get in as Champions Cup runners up)

So ideally we want to be in Saracens group as it means we don't have to play a seed in our group.

The fact there are only 4 seeds and the rest is an open draw means we could for example have our games as follows

La Rochelle H
Leinster H
Stormers A
Lyon A
(Only possible if Toulouse beat La Rochelle)

OR

Connacht H
Toulon H
Bayonne A
Cardiff A
(Only possible if drawn in the same group as Sarries)

Must say I have no enthusiasm left for this competition. The only positive for me is the cash it brings in for the club.

The only excitement for me is the inevitable 20 page thread when we get drawn to play a SA team away.
