Well, I remember Wilkinson in his prime having a kicking coach, so I am not sure if how good you are is important?tigerburnie wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 2:47 pmIs there anyone better than Handre Pollard at the moment?markharbtiger wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 2:42 pm
I do wonder these days if a dedicated kicking coach is required at club level? Who has been looking after that?

I would imagine it is similar to the worlds greatest golfers still having coaches. There are always tweaks that can be made or if you loose form a reexamination of your techniquemarkharbtiger wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 5:30 pmWell, I remember Wilkinson in his prime having a kicking coach, so I am not sure if how good you are is important?tigerburnie wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 2:47 pmIs there anyone better than Handre Pollard at the moment?markharbtiger wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 2:42 pm

I believe Sinfield essentially took on the kicking coach role, certainly Atkinson spoke how he improved his kicking after he joined Tigers.
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

I'm rather hoping do a lot more passing and catching and a lot less kicking, everyone has worked that out now.
"If you want entertainment, go to the theatre," says Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill. "Rugby players play the game to win.15/1/21.

And yet statistics consistently show at club and international level that the sides who kick the most win te most gamestigerburnie wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 7:00 pm I'm rather hoping do a lot more passing and catching and a lot less kicking, everyone has worked that out now.

IMO it’s not about how much you kick, more about how and when you kick

I remember Toby Flood being a decent.kicker then going to England training where they had a specialist kicking coach, Toby went backwards and for me never recovered. I doubt that Tim Stimpson or Dusty Hare had kicking coaches and they didn't do too badly, surely a skills coach can work with the players and maybe the occasional visit from.a specialist like Paul Grayson to help.tweak technique but a full time kicking coach in my opinion would be an expensive luxury for a skill.that everyone has a different approach to because it works for them.

It's a bit of a game of chess. They're trying to manipulate the opposition backfield. It's the most efficient way to win territory and/or create opportunities for the counter.

I think Stimo did do some kicking coaching. Dusty was an enigma who a bit like a golfer adjusted his technique depending how far out it was, a little wedge in front of the posts more of a 3 wood from 40 yards plusjohnthegriff wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 7:46 pm I remember Toby Flood being a decent.kicker then going to England training where they had a specialist kicking coach, Toby went backwards and for me never recovered. Isn't this a direct quote from the VHS Dusty made in about 1990!? Interesting watch, BTW!Rugbygramps wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 7:50 pmI think Stimo did do some kicking coaching. Jimmy Gopperth, I understand, invented his own kicking tee which he now sells.

Alred works with a number of players including both Ford and Sexton. The fact he also works with top golfers maybe underlines the balance of technical coaching (of which he is excellent) and the more mental side of the discipline too.Rugbygramps wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 2:56 pm In days of yore a kicking coach was more of an expert that was bought in. I think Ford bought Aldred in for help and Wilkinson has been helping Marcus Smith
