Tigers Coaching Team - 2023/2024 Season

Post by TigerFeetSteve »

Wanted a thread to talk about the full coaching team now we have Dan Mckellar in place

Thanks to RB who I've lifted a bit of copy and paste off the squad threads, have tweaked the roles from what the club officially call them to the role responsibilities:

Start of the season our coaches looked like this:
Head Coach: Steve Borthwick
General Manager: Leigh Jones
Head of Senior recruitment: Richard Wilks
Defence Coach: Kevin Sinfield
Attack Coach: Richard Wigglesworth
Scrum Coach: Tom Harrison
Assistant Backs: Matt Smith
Assistant Forwards: Brett Deacon
Head of Physical Performance: Aled Walters
Head of Medical: Simon Wallace
Senior Performance Analyst: Matt Egan
Team Manager: Tessa Carrington

Currently look like this:
Head Coach: Richard Wigglesworth
General Manager: Leigh Jones
Head of Senior recruitment: Richard Wilks
Defence Coach: Matt Everard
Attack Coach:
Scrum Coach: Tom Harrison
Assistant Backs: Matt Smith
Assistant Forwards: Brett Deacon
Head of Physical Performance: Aled Walters
Head of Medical: Simon Wallace
Senior Performance Analyst: Matt Egan
Team Manager: Tessa Carrington

Next season:
Head Coach: Dan Mckellar
General Manager: Leigh Jones
Head of Senior recruitment: Richard Wilks
Defence Coach: Matt Everard
Attack Coach: VACANT
Scrum Coach: Tom Harrison
Assistant Backs: Matt Smith
Assistant Forwards: Brett Deacon
Head of Physical Performance: VACANT
Head of Medical: Simon Wallace
Senior Performance Analyst: Matt Egan
Team Manager: Tessa Carrington

Looking at it for next year we've lost Borthwick, Sinfield, Wigglesworth & Walters

We've brought in Mckellar & Everard (who has managed both attack and defence)

Rumored possibly to have England interested in Harrison as scrum coach.

First thing now IMO, start identifying the attack coach & S&C shortlists. (Probably well underway, hopefully with Oval insights etc)

In the background have Mckellar get to know the team in place see who he gels with and who there is friction with, it may be one or two others move on, though hopefully not. He may also decide to switch one or two guys round e.g. give Everard attack not defence, possibly down to who Mckellar may want to bring in too.

Anyway this thread is to duscuss the vacancies, rumors and what we want going forwards
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

Would love to see Vesty but he won’t leave Saints. No doubt our new head coach will know plenty of attack coaches down under.

The Rugby Paper suggesting that Ian Peel is close to joining England as scrum coach, so it's looking more likely we can keep Harrison as scrum coach

Everard was brought in as an academy coach, he's got experience as an academy transition coach which is where we might move him back to. Will depend on who McKellar wants and who is available as well as how McKellar wants to play. Everard is a really useful option to have on the staff with that versatility.

Based on the last couple of games I'd be tempted to keep Everard as defence coach.

Very much agreed on that.

Is he not sticking with Edinburgh? I’ve seen that Diamond wants him to stay.
Cheering on the Tigers in Detroit.
Previously a slower, shorter, less good looking version of Tom Croft.

I would have thought that if Mike Blair had stepped down to move into an attack coach role he would be better off doing that somewhere else in a totally different environment than just moving backwards in the same organisation. It might make it easier from a personal life point of view but I really don’t see how it helps from a Career progression perspective.
I would certainly be happy to see him at Tigers

Why wouldn't you want Blair to stay, he's done a good job with Edinburgh on limited resources. However, as said would you want to step down in the same environment? Not sure most would want to.

If we could get Paul Stridgeon, I'd be quite happy with that as a replacement for Aled.

Bobby is certainly up there with Aled for renown S&C coaches, would be a great addition to any coaching setup although French club's seem to be the favorites

Does this mean we're more likely to lose Harrison?

At a recent home game, I noticed our young returning internationals watching from the terraces. They greeted warmly and hugged Aled and other coaching staff and various players, and were similarly responded to, but not Brett Deacon - is he not so popular?

Maybe don’t read too much into things

Both Deacons are not really known to be huggers.
