Found it, it happens at the Bristol lineout at 48 minutes.

It is also especially bad as he has two gos at his face. After rewatching this there is no way Vui should escape a ban.

Thanks! That’s dreadful! And if CMK really said “I’m not gonna look at it wait for the citing commission” after the complaint then he needs a word too! The officiating just gets worse by the week,it truly is the pits!

I think in times gone by Mr Johnson and / or Mr Richards would have had a quiet word with Mr Vui concerning his behaviour at the next ruck.

It kept the sneaky stuff out the game.

Just imagine how much time Johno would spend on the naughty step if he was playing in the modern game.

I really don’t think it did. The only thing that has helped cut out the sneaky stuff is the scrutiny of multiple cameras. As we have those views it’s clear there was contact with the eye area although I did wonder if he was trying to asphyxiate Chessum. Either way clear red.

From that Twitter pic, its small, I can't see clearly (excuse the pun) that there is any gouging, it looks like a flat hand to the face obscuring his view, is it any worse than a flat hand off to the face?

A hand off vs a face grab is the difference between a charge down and a knock on. We can all see the difference even if we struggle to define it.

It is hard to see but on the first face grab Vui does look like he makes contact with the eye area then he removes his hand for a second before placing it back on Chessum's face again, at best it is reckless but the fact he has a second go removes doubt it was an accident.

It looks to me like he's covering Ollie's eyes so he can't see what he's doing. Annoying, unsporting, but not illegal.

So the "Limit contact with the head" doesn't apply in this case then?

Law 9 (12). Dangerous play:

A player must not physically or verbally abuse anyone. Physical abuse includes, but is not limited to, biting, punching, contact with the eye or eye area, striking with any part of the arm, shoulder, head or knee(s), stamping, trampling, tripping or kicking.

Looked pretty obvious contact with the eye area to me. Twice.

CMK didn't really look too interested in enforcing any laws on Saturday, we might as well have not had a ref at all.
