Re: Eddie Butler RIP
Just seen this. Really sad news, maybe not the greatest player but forged a decent career for himself as a journalist and broadcaster. Some of his French pronunciations will go down in history.
He was narrating one of the documentaries on the late queen the other day and I commented to my wife it was a strange choice, although his tone fitted it perfectly

Re: Eddie Butler RIP
So many iconic moments in rugby history are inextricably linked to his voice describing them
He will be missed.

Re: Eddie Butler RIP
His "print" journalism was always very good (Although Austin might disagree) & the Moore & Butler double act...aka Statler & Waldorf was good value, an instantly recognisable voice.

Re: Eddie Butler RIP
Yes RIP indeed….always laughed when he virtually cheered if Wales scored vs England.
Re: Eddie Butler RIP
One of the voices of rugby. Condolences to all his family and friends.
Re: Eddie Butler RIP
He seemed to have been a marmite character in commentary and did lay things on a bit thick and theatrical in his monologues but that was the style. I always found him to be entertaining and a good double act with Brian Moore in Comms.
I would definitely have bought him a beers if I every had the opportunity. Rest in peace.

A bit like our very own Tudor Thomas. Though in his case it was not just French pronunciations. Some of his Pacific Islander's name pronunciations were legendary.Rugbygramps wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 6:56 pm Some of his French pronunciations will go down in history.
Tigers for the premiership and European Cup. Get behind the team and make some noise!!

Re: Eddie Butler RIP
I enjoyed his commentary, especially as alluded to above with Brian Moore as foil. Never again will the near orgasmic pronunciation of Teddy Thomas be heard in the rugby world, which is a sadness. RIP Eddie.

Lots of laughs and cheers then!westwinds31 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 7:27 pm Yes RIP indeed….always laughed when he virtually cheered if Wales scored vs England.

Great delivery with Moore. Loved his monologues, his voice was just perfect.Offside wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 8:32 pm He seemed to have been a marmite character in commentary and did lay things on a bit thick and theatrical in his monologues but that was the style.
