Tigers v Newcastle (H) - 17th September 2022 - 3-00pm

Post by Tigerbeat »

First home game of the season on the back of a close defeat at Exeter. Not sure what to expect in selections as Steve Borthwick has his own ideas.

I’m hoping that we bring some of our England players back like other teams have. Steward and Porter being my biggest hopes.

Borthwick has said we are observing the 10 week rest period and I'm glad he has. This bringing players back early smacks of desperation and shows a lack of care over the players. I'd much rather our England guys are given an extra week rather than rushed back for a game Vs Falcons. The season is long.

It's hard to guestimate a team for this as we don't know if Watson and Hegarty are available or not. If they are both fit then I'd be tempted for;

Cronin, Taufete’e, Cole
Wells, Henderson
Martin, Cracknell, Liebenburg
Youngs, Hegarty
Gopperth, Cokanasiga
Nadolo, Watson, Potter

Clare, Whitcombe, Hurd, Snyman, Reffell, Edwards, Scott, Murimurivalu.

Not a slight on Clare who was great Vs Chiefs but he buried himself for the side so maybe 30 mins off the bench Vs Falcons.

If Hegarty isn't fit then Gopperth goes into 10 and Scott into the centre with PC moving to 12. If Watson unavailable then Hegarty to 15 and centres as per prior sentence. If neither are available then.

9. Youngs
10. Gopperth
11. Nadolo
12. Cokanasiga
13. Scott
14. Potter
15. Ashton

21. Edwards, 22. Walsh/Meredith 23. Murimurivalu

My guess at the team is Watson being back, but no Hegarty or Burns again, plus

Watson
Ashton
Scott
Cokanasiga
Potter
Gopperth
Youngs
Cronin
Clare
Cole
Wells
Snyman
Martin
Reffell
Liebenberg

Taufete'e
Whitcombe
Hurd
Henderson
Cracknell
Wigglesworth
Walsh
Nadolo
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

Taufete to start for me - Clare put in a massive shift yesterday and we could do with another carrier in the pack.

I’m hoping Burns will be back, even off the bench will be massive.

Think with the new HIA rules he needs a minimum of 8 days off after a failed HIA so there's no chance of playing.

Cronin Taufete Cole
Wells Snyman
Martin Liebenberg Cracknell
Youngs Gopperth
Cokansiga Scott
Nadolo Watson Potter

Clare Whitcombe Hurd Henderson Reffell Wiggs Hegarty Ashton

Still think that’s a very strong 23. We know the pack with preform. Want to see more ball in hand from Tigers. Potter was great in the warm ups, need to get him in space. Hopefully some carrying in the backs will give us some more attack.

This weekend isn't rushing them back. They've been in full training for 5(?) weeks and the 10 week period will have expired. Why penalise yourself unnecessarily when you could only have the England players available for half the league matches anyway.

Have you got a good link for those (I can't find one)? From what I can find its 12 days for concussion (diagnosed concussion I presume), but provisions are available for those who've failed HIA but with limited symptoms, history etc.

10 weeks makes the available for match week 3.

Why penalise yourself and the player by bringing the back early and then getting injured and missing more games?

Pat Lam said this last season about Kyle Sinckler:

“The Lions players have requested themselves,” the Bristol director of rugby, Pat Lam, said. “They want to get back playing, across the board. It’s all driven by each player – each player makes that decision themselves. What we will never do is tell a player he has got to come back and play. It’s up to that player. Kyle is one of them who has requested he wants to play, and then it goes to the RFU and then ourselves.”

Sinckler played 10 games for Bristol and had an injury layoff in December and his season ending early in April. His form dropped off and he ended up on the bench during the 6N as well. Of course Sinckler opted to come back early from the Lions rest period...
