The Rolling Maul Podcast - Special Guests - Latest: Andrea Pinchen

Post by iceman_19 »

Morning all

If you haven’t heard of the Rolling Maul podcast, we’re a Tigers’ fans podcast hosted by myself and AViewFromLE2 (aka Elliot) - we had a great first season, pretty well timed too, and are hoping to go even better this year.

We don’t want to clog up threads with plugs for the podcast so we thought we’d top this thread up whenever we get a special guest on who may pique your interest. Obviously we’d argue it’s always worth a listen but we’re not oblivious to the fact that some of you will be more interested in what the big names have to say!!

[EDIT] As there's been quite a bit of comment below, I thought I'd list the episodes in the opening post so they are easier to find. Just to keep the list concise, this doesn't include the amazing journalists like Martin Crowson, Charlie Morgan, Charles Richardson, Adam Whitty, Chris Edgerton and Bobby Bridge, who we have on regularly, as well as opposition podcasts for some skewed insights ahead of games.

[END EDIT]

First up, we were super lucky to be joined by Nick Mullins AKA the voice of rugby and the narrator of the Freddie Burns fairytale. He’s great value, had so much insight and even stuck around to help us preview the rest of the league too.

It is far longer than our target time of 90 minutes but that’s partly because it’s a league preview episode, and also because Nick had so much good material that we didn’t want to cut any of it! We figured you can always skip forward if you get bored….

Anyway, hope you enjoy!

In our latest episode, Elliott and I are joined by one of our favourite players to watch when we first starting supporting Tigers, Leon Lloyd.

They say don’t meet your heroes - that’s rubbish. He is a seriously impressive guy even in rugby retirement and it was great hearing about his emergence amongst legends of the club, his favourite memories and his views on the current crop.

Morning all, extra special guest this week as we’re joined by Telusa Veainu, one of the best attacking players we’ve ever had at Welford Road and genuinely one of the nicest and most humble guys I’ve ever spoken to.

Given the circumstances of his departure, he regrets never being able to say goodbye to the fans and it’s clear how much love he still has for the club, the supporters and the city and county in general. We chat through his Tigers career, learn how he immersed himself at a club he almost ended up at by accident, and his preference of Leicester cuisine over Parisian.

Don’t want to seem like a killjoy, but am I the only one who is uncomfortable with this forum being used to to publicise a pod cast for free. I’m sure Mr. Cooper has other avenues he could use.

We make no money whatsoever from this podcast. It costs us money which is not fully covered by sponsorship, and takes up hours per week.

We make it because we love the club and we occasionally get some wonderful guests on, who fans may be interested to hear from. This is a good forum to let people know who we’ve had on since it is after all, a Leicester Tigers podcast for Leicester Tigers fans.

If people are not interested, there is no obligation to listen to it nor an obligation to click on the thread, which is only updated when we’ve had a guest on.

I would therefore suggest that a sticky would be more appropriate. Making or not making money is no body else’s business

Absolutely love the podcast! Great to hear about what's going on and the great guest you have managed to get on. You're a massive credit to all us Tigers fans who love hearing all the rumours, reviews and analysis you guys bring to the pod every week.

The minimal publication we do for the podcast allows anyone interested another medium to listen to game discussion, breaking news/rumour (we were the first to confirm Pollard signing and Montoya re-signing) and listen to what special guests (usually current or former players) with connections to the club have to say. It is bang on relevant to this forum.

I’m more than happy for this to be a sticky which is a call for admin, but otherwise I’d suggest you simply don’t click on the thread if you know you’re not interested.

Posts have been removed. This is a rugby related thread and the particular episode relates to an ex-Tigers player. I have no problem with this content but will get an opinion on whether it is appropriate from the club this evening.

How can any mention of an ex Tigers player ever be justifiably deemed to be inappropriate ? The fact is that ex Tigers are frequently discussed on this forum without any issues. Ed Slater, Ellis Genge, George Ford, Manu Tuilagi to name but a few.

IMO this is a perfectly legitimate place to have a thread on a podcast about the club.

We have thread on former members of the club and how they get on.

If it was advertising something not to do with the club fine it's out of order, but it is a podcast of fans talking about the club, which happens to be exactly the point of this forum...
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

I’ll repeat my removed post, it is obviously just me, and as They have stated they will only post to update on new programmes, I will know im not missing any earth shattering news.

Funny how Pollard and Montoya are mentioned but not Moroni and MVS

This is something we put a lot of effort into and you can only find time to be disingenuous. If you don’t like it, ignore it. It’s not forced upon you.

Your argument is that some Tigers fans, who run a Tigers podcast discussing Tigers news and Tigers matches with cameos from current or former Tigers players, should not flag the podcast as being of potential interest to other Tigers fans on a Tigers forum. Absolutely bonkers.

Whilst you attempt to have a run at our credibility:

Moroni - we never said he had re-signed but that the parties both agreed they wanted to renew, that went cold after we snapped up Watson. That took his spot.

MVS - we said he had overcome a return to play hurdle, which he had. Whilst we hoped that it would lead to a return for Leicester, but insurance issues made that difficult. He has since made a successful return to play in SA.

I'm sorry but I am going to defend ourselves a little bit here. The vast majority of our podcasts are analysing the games both gone and upcoming, talking about previous legends of the club and if we're lucky we get to chat to a guest and nause all over their time at the club or in their field. We did not set the podcast up with the intention to be a transfer breaking venture, however as time has gone on we have picked up different bits and pieces, and if we believe them to be credible we share them.

This has meant we were exclusives on the Pollard deal, as well as being the only outlet stating that Montoya was going to sign a new contract. We also said that Cokanasiga, Watson & Gopperth were signing also. On MVS we stated he was going through his return to play protocols and was passing them and was fit to play. Given he has just played over the weekend, we look to have been proven right on that as well. Whilst we do not get 100% accuracy a) nobody does b) as stated we're not that type of podcast to chase such stories and C) we're fans not journalists. We live and breath Tigers like all of us on here.

As has been stated by Mike, this thread is only to highlight an episode if we have a guest on - we aim to get those with links to Tigers or if we're lucky someone known nationally like Charlie Morgan or Nick Mullins. We do not want to spam the forum, neither do we publicise every episode - this thread is just a way of highlighting what we're up to and pointing people to our direction. Whilst we use Social Media mainly, not everyone has a twitter page or use it regularly, nor does everyone read the facebook groups, so this forum is a pretty good way to bump some interest every now and then.

You may not like us, you may not listen to us - both things are of course acceptable! But please do not unfairly slag us off, we both put a lot of time and effort into these. We are just fellow fans after all.

Not at all I speak as I find. As I have said I am obviously in the wrong and if others enjoy it then brilliant. The only time I have listened was the aforementioned episode which if memory serves was touted as having 3 earth shattering pieces of news, 2 of which never happened, and most of the time was taken up by two 30 something year olds swearing like horny teenagers.
As for Tigers fans I’m sure you are but you and your colleague, a view from LE2 I believe, don’t seem to contribute much on here other than self publicity
I’m going to add to this as another post has appeared, a very reasonable one I might add. It is your choice to work hard and spend hours producing your podcast. No doubt you get great enjoyment from it, as do you fans, but I have just as much right to my view as you do to yours, so please don’t come the wow is me we work hard, because someone has a different opinion to you.
