Re: LEICESTER TIGERS 2022/23 - Prisoner of Oadby Pre-Season
Good evening, a newbie to the forum here…l am so looking forward to seeing the team in September.. A full pre season and the young guys benefiting from Jimmy Goperth’s extra input to further develop their game. How will we structure our playing style with Pollard at 10 - or will he get more chances at 12 with Freddie Burns at 10? I get the impression that he Freddie had a monkey on his back, now lifted with that unforgettable drop goal and he will play with a confidence of a player who doesn’t have to prove anything.
I hope that we continue to build Fortress Welford Road , that the team won’t allow anything else than victories at home.
We did incredibly well with the amount of away victories we had last year. We were never going to win every game…but just hold on.Our attitude should be that we can remain unbeaten all season. I know that the team say that they want to win every game, well let’s do it. Set our bar so high that we won’t fail.
Now we are just waiting for a Mr Genge replacement and l do hope that we get the leavers list soon!
Sorry about rambling on, but the potential of this team and what they could achieve is frightening-roll on September.

Cronin was announced as Genge replacement some weeks agoCrumbiestalker wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 11:13 pm Good evening, a newbie to the forum here…l am so looking forward to seeing the team in September.. My son tells me that Anthony Watson has been doing rehab/sprint training at Loughborough Uni - on our doorstep.

So as I did post,if he's rehabbing and now doing sprint training how has he passed a medical? Or are they graded?

The fact he’s doing sprint training suggests he has passed a physical
You don’t do sprint training on a :censored: up knee

No but you build up to sprinting,no need to get out your pram but the OP did say rehab too.i was just curious as to how medicals work, because if he’s still rehabbing and starting his sprint training now that means that at the time we signed him he wasn’t sprint training so it could’ve been that at that exact time we took a chance on him. That’s all my point is!RagingBull wrote: ↑Mon Jun 27, 2022 10:43 am The fact he’s doing sprint training suggests he has passed a physical

Re: LEICESTER TIGERS 2022/23 - Prisoner of Oadby Pre-Season
It'll be training I'd have thought if he's sprinting, a lot of force to put through the joint otherwise. After so long out might be working on his technique and sprint endurance. Tigers players have been up there doing speed training before now. Not sure whether it's through the university or one of the officiating private training companies that operate out of the HiPac centre they have by the track. For instance Dan Norton does some work with a company called Speed Works who also have British Professional Sprinters as coaches and they do sessions up at Loughborough Uni.
I assume the club physios will have had discussions with his doctor and reviewed his medical history and recovery to the point where the offer was made.

Thanks, the short term deal also tells you there is a bit of risk involved too,but some will just put that down to salary cap. Plus we signed him in April,I don’t believe for one second he was sprint training then. It’s nearly July. But all signs point to a full recovery at present , he’s a great player!sam16111986 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 27, 2022 11:10 amIt'll be training I'd have thought if he's sprinting, a lot of force to put through the joint otherwise. My apologies all round! Upon a bit of investigation, the knee is fine. Anthony was actually fit enough to play end of this season but then injured his calf. Great news!

Players are regularly signed when a current injury would prevent them being passed as fully fit to play. A medical takes into account known injuries, tries to make an independent assessment of those known injuries severity and search for potentially unknown ones. It's not an exact science and in a sport such as rugby there is always risk.
When Sale signed Ford he had one of the best injury records you can find in an established international - he's now rumoured to have ruptured his Achilles. When Toulon signed Wilkinson he had some of the worst injury issues you get in a player who hasn't been forced into early retirement - he played a minimum of 24 games and maximum of 33 games a season over a 5 year stay with them.

In the circumstances I think Cronin is a good signing as well. He isn't on Genge's level but few are. Cronin will however cost significantly less, hopefully be available most the season and is solid in set-piece. Cronin also offers a threat over the ball at the ruck which is always useful.
When we lost Genge my ideal scenario would have been a young international class LH such as Guram Gogichashvili. Someone with the potential to be a long term first XV starter for the big games we will hopefully remain involved in. With none available an experienced and high quality club level LH that wouldn't break the bank whilst Whitcombe comes through was my second choice - Cronin fits that bill.
I hope that next season we see Cronin and Whitcombe rotate in the starting shirt with Nephi used as a specialist bench LH as much as possible. That's where Nephi is best as an impact sub on the LH side.
In 2019/20 Nephi and Heyes made a similar number of apps but Heyes made more starts for instance. I'd be delighted if similar could happen with Whitcombe and Leatigaga on the LH next season.

In his recent interviews he said he starts at Oval Park on 1st July. Sounds like he's just doing some extra work (as he has been doing outside of Bath) after moving up.RagingBull wrote: ↑Mon Jun 27, 2022 10:43 am The fact he’s doing sprint training suggests he has passed a physical

As said on the radio last week, Cronin is an excellent insurance policy whilst Whitcombe finds his feet and hopefully/potentially works up to being the starting LH.ABClub wrote: ↑Mon Jun 27, 2022 12:54 pm In the circumstances I think Cronin is a good signing as well. There's a nice range of ages on the loosehead: Whitcombe turns 22 next season, Leatigaga turns 28, Cronin turns 32.
