Agreed and in tighter financial times, having an academy producing the next generation of players is vital. Those who are reliant on poaching developed players from other clubs are the ones that are going to continue to have issues going forward. We seem to have found a real skill at developing home grown talent and finding and bringing on unknown tallent from other clubs and countries and that is paying dividends.

Could someone confirm/deny my memory? That the turnround in the academy started when Geordan retired as a player and took over from Jed(?) Glyn? The timing may just have been coincidental.

I may be wrong but I think the attitude in the academy and the recruitment process improved under Geordan’s tenure.Cagey Tiger wrote: ↑Thu Sep 29, 2022 11:43 am Could someone confirm/deny my memory? Watson was definitely for only 1 year. I think Reffell is still uncertain but suspicion is he could be on a form of rolling contract that allows him to stay hereKnightonian wrote: ↑Thu Sep 29, 2022 12:10 pm Do we have any idea who’s contracts finish at the end of this season….

Would love Reffell to stay but could also see him leaving in a few years to one of the regions. Technically he can stay indefinitely on a rolling contract but the WRU will also been in his ear.
We have a ready made replacement in Illione who could be a nailed on starter for us and Eng if he carries on his current trajectory. Cracknell has shown too he can mix it with the best in the premiership.

Will be interesting to see what happens with the lad who played 7 for Exeter on Sunday. Younger than Tommy but has a welsh cap, will he be required to return to the valleysLeicestertinytiger wrote: ↑Thu Sep 29, 2022 12:44 pm Would love Reffell to stay but could also see him leaving in a few years to one of the regions. Well the club don't announce contract lengths so it's hard to say, younger players often sign longer contracts than older players, but 2 or 3 year contracts is the norm.Knightonian wrote: ↑Thu Sep 29, 2022 12:10 pm Do we have any idea who’s contracts finish at the end of this season….

Re: LEICESTER TIGERS 2022/23 - Prisoner of Oadby Pre-Season
The success of the Academy is down to David Wilkes and his team. It is correct that a few years ago Ged Glynn made changes that improved transition and that under Geordan those young players matured and progressed into the first team playing squad. However our record of winning the under 18's title three years on the trot (third year shared) speaks for itself. The credit goes to David Wilkes his coaches and of course the talent scouts. During the pandemic the lads had two seasons of no rugby so the chain was slightly broken but players like Louis Chessum and Archie Vanes are showing it is now repaired.
Re: LEICESTER TIGERS 2022/23 - Prisoner of Oadby Pre-Season
One thing always strikes me as difficult with academies is that if very successful they will churn out far more players than you need.
I guess that is why you hear "ex-Man United academy player" so often.
