So if a player retires through injury the club gets an extra £400k outside the salary cap, whereas if a player retires through choice the club gets £0.

I do not understand this because at the end of the day the club may or may not have to replace a retired player and this is not dependant upon the reason for that retirement.

I trust when we lost Deacon, Benjamin and Allen, to name but a few, that we took up the £400K on each occasion????

Indeed, but I guess the fact that a club is given an increase of £400k outside the cap does not mean they have that all that money available to spend or indeed want to spend any or all of it? Of course in the case of Saracens lack of money is never an issue.

The salary cap is the maximum you can spend, if not your budget is the cap.
