Post by Off Piste Tiger »

We have been taking our kids on to The Crumbie terrace for the last four years .We get there 1 1/2 before kick off and alway get the kids to the front. We have not had many experiences of people trying to push there kids in front. Most of the time there is plenty of space on terrace .If there is space we are happy to fit kids in next to ours or just behind them .I do agree that it is rude for people to do this. They should make the effort to get there early .We find the time spent before the game socialising with all the very friendly people who stand around were we stand most enjoyable . I have sat in other parts of the ground ,but you can not beat the Crumbie Terrace .I will stand until I not able to .

Phew a lot of post because one person does not like the idea of a small child standing at the front of him on the terrace. There are several disabled areas for those that are disabled , the front of the terrace should be for the kids or very short people. I usually stand in the upper half of the terrace and quite often end up getting someone taller standing in front of me. or wearing a big hat or waving a flag - Luckily I am a reasonable person and appreciate that the terrace is or should be the area where we are all Tigers fans and it takes all sorts - unfortunately some people on the terrace believe that because they are fortunate enought to be able to arrive on the terrace 2 hours before the game starts (look mom I'm on the telly ) and will condemn kids to not being able to see the game . it is a shame

I have just read this entire thread with amazement...!

If you are lucky to have enough spare time in your life that you can arrive 2 hours before kick off why does that make you better than anyone else...?

The majority of people have full and active lives right up to the kick off and cannot put aside that much time. I am a father of 3 girls who all have separate activities on a Saturday & Sunday morning and also Friday nights so it is a constant battle to get to any game with more than 30 mins to spare.

That said, when I do take one of my daughters I have never had a problem with her going down to the front and we always stand 3 or 4 steps up and keep her in view. I have never seen or heard any moaning when we do this and have received nothing but warmth from those at the front.

Some of the views expressed here are more of a criticism of other peoples lifestyles, based on bigotted assumptions. How do you know if someone has just come out of the bar with 5 mins to go,when you have been standing at the front for the last 2 hours...! Very Daily Mail.

This whole discussion reminds me of one that raged about 3 years ago when people criticised some of our fans for not being "real" because they were wearing new shirts. Following this thinking I guess that you are saying that only "early" fans are real fans. All totally ridiculous.

When I was growing up the kids were always pushed to the front and long may it happen. I shall continue to do the same with my kids and continue to let kids through. Believe it or not the Tigers and the World need children to survive so stop all this ageist claptrap and book a seat in the Cat Stand.

You may find you can do something productive in those 2 hours saved...!

I have no bother about children coming in front of me and generally that is also the same for most people around us. Nor do I have a bother with any adult standing in front of me if there is space. I would prefer it is they are not taller than me but that is easily remedied by politely requesting I swap places with them or that they stand in front to my taller friend.

One thing I have noticed though is a holier than thou attitude from those who choose to arrive 2 hours before the game.

If you see the need to arrive that early and stand in your exact spot, then that is great and good luck to you, but it does not entitle you to all the concrete within a 5 yard radius.

My mate and I usually turn up 30 to 45mins before the game after a pint in the pub. This seems a reasonable amount of time to wait and have a banter with those about you and to secure a reasonable position. We politely excuse ourseves and settle into the genaral area we are usually in. Normally this is fine and we get on with all the regulars in that area. Some arrive before us and some after us. But there are the odd one that try to block your entry to "make a point".

I usually continue to be over polite or jokey and find a reasonable "space " on the terrace. If the "block" becomes more persistant I meet it with marginally more force if the polite excuse me's don't work. I will not be stopped from standing on a empty square yard of concrete because someone likes to point out they are more worthy than you because they stood on a space for an hour longer that you, rather than have a pint, or take the kids swimming or whatever else life throws up. The terrace is a place of first come first served but only for the actual space you stand on, and as long as politeness and friendliness is shown by all as they arrive there should be no problem. Those that chose to arrive exceptionally early should extend the same courtesy.

It does not make you "better" than anyone else.

It does however convey the right to preference over which square metre of concrete you stand on, over somebody who arrives later.

If somebody's "lifestyle" is such that they cannot arrive in time to secure the square metre of concrete that they desire, then they must rely on the goodwill of others to accommodate them, which may not always be forthcoming.

Well indeed - I've seen that too - the 2 hour before brigade almost set up camp!

Bags, Flasks, containers, stools, steps, and all sorts of other paraphanalia set up around them - then complain that some one has the audacity to stand there and are standing on their bag!!

The red nose and cheeks, the slurred speech, the comment "perhaps shouldnt have had that last one", the unsteady walk when they finally moved away, the half finished pint pot in their hands......You didnt have to be Sherlock Holmes to work it out - and if it had been the Daily Mail, they would have linked the incident to immigration and house prices :smt003

I might be portly but I don't require a "metre of concrete" :smt005

I think there seem to be some "holier than thou" views from both sides of this argument. Let's calm down and stop trading insults from both sides.

Of course if I ruled Welford Road, there would be a separate family standing area, a separate standing area for men with beer and bad digestive problem (Gate would need an area all of his own) and a separate - and VIP - area for myself, DCat, Cornish Tigress, PamB and the rest of the "Mothers".... :smt003 :smt029 where we could congregate like the ladies near the guillotine in the French revolution.

I will continue to get to the ground as early as I can, chat to the nice people around me, stand in my place and when asked, let small child or children in alongside me.

quote "It does however convey the right to preference over which square metre of concrete you stand on, over somebody who arrives later."

If you need a square metre to stand in you are an extremely large person and occupy enough space for 4 ordinary mortals (allowing a generous 500mm x 500mm each ) so maybe you should buy 4 tickets to stake your claim !

I will in the future be bringing my grandson to a few select matches - I guess that even tho I am a season ticket holder on the terrace I will have to buy tickets in one of the stands to enable him to see the game.
That is a shame as the terrace should be where the fans are more amicable and he may never get to 'enjoy' the experience.

Not at all, APJ - bring him to the A&L (sorry Santander) end of the terrace by the 22 and there are a number of people there who will let him in, I can vouch for that.

Very true...! :smt002 :smt038 Although it is very difficult to turn around and see people coming out of the bar when you are clinging to the front rail for dear life in case a small child tries to sneak in...! :smt003

The most offensive thing about this thread is the suggestion that people who arrive early must have un-busy lives.

When I was young and of small height, my mates and I would arrive early to sports events to get to the front because we were BRAINY.

Other kids would arrive late and expect to be ushered to the front because they were THICK, and we would kick them.

And now you arrive early to be first in the queue when the bar opens, and stand there blocking everybody else!!

Indeed I arrive early to the bar! I need to get beer down me so I'm less brainy. :smt005 :smt005 :smt005

To be fair, I always move away from the bar though. People who stay at the bar annoy me. Lots of things annoy me!
