Januarie case delayed
A warrant was on Friday authorised for the arrest of Springbok rugby scrumhalf Enrico Januarie, charged with drunken driving.

He again failed to appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court for his trial on the alleged offence.

Januarie, better known as "Ricky", was to have gone on trial before Magistrate Helma Smit on Friday - a sequel to an early-hour motor collision in Durbanville in September 2008.

At Friday's proceedings, defence attorney Frikkie Erasmus told the court Januarie was absent "due to rugby contractual obligations overseas".

Erasmus said he had negotiated with prosecutor Tracy Lewis for the case to be postponed to February 5, and for the arrest warrant to be held over until then.

The warrant would only be executed - and Januarie brought to court under arrest - if he again failed to appear at the next hearing, Erasmus said.

The first arrest warrant was authorised in October last year, but was not executed because Januarie appeared in court of his own volition on his return from overseas.

According to the court record, Januarie also failed to appear in court last July - but with the court's permission - while on tour with the Springboks during the Tri-Nations tournament. - Sapa
