Emoticon smiley thingys

Post by Leghorn »

"sporn of satan" I say.

Is it just me or do others feel that these pesky things are becoming a distracting irritant.

I once thought that they were mildly amusing but now find them increasingly boring.

(I'm now expecting a liberal sprinkling of the things by way of a reply)

My ten year old still thinks that they're great, but my fifteen year old has now grown out of them.

Referring to a post on t'other thread though, I do find them useful for putting a statement in context.

Two occassions when I didn't:

I was deliberately sarcastic when someone suggested that bloodgate was the sort of thing that would happen in football. I pointed out that football doesn't have blood substitutes, but what the heck, let's blame football anyway.

The poor lady on the end of what she called my "ascerbic wit" vowed never to return to the forum again. Ooops.

And on another "Who will be the ref" thread, I said that whoever it was, I'm sure that by 5pm I'll have decided he's a blind, incompetent idiot. It was meant to be a joke but I was immediately lambasted as being a typical Tigers supporter, always blaming the ref.

I think that in either case, a smilie or two may have prevented the misunderstanding.

I like the blushing one. I need the blushing one. And the chortling one does rock. And I like the waving one. In other words, I like them, and like Kin says, they do help add a context to a post and make them more friendly. But then I am a girlie.

In days of old when knights were bold scribes wrote with quill pens and often adorned their writing with fancy script and illustrative decorations.

Later others learnt to write and were taught grammer and punctuation. Mr. Caxton invented the printing press which attempted to replicate the work of scribes. But alas the proletariat stuck to simple writing.

Then the infernal typewriter was invented. Two colours (if you were lucky) and a single font. And QWERTY to stop the type heads colliding.

Now, the Lord be praised, we all command a multiplicity of fonts (although not on this forum), a wide choice of colours, and joy and rapture, emoticons! (nb Kinny, just a single ! :smt002 ) Alas, :smt022, we seem to be stuck with QWERTY (unless you are French - then you have ZWERTY :smt003 )

Of course, luddites would have us live in the dark ages, and others wld txt spk so u av no idea wat is mnt.

I use messageboards without them, and those with them as an option. Sometimes I use them if the mood takes me, but it can be irritating if you get half a page post that is all emoticons.

I do wish we could have a witch casting a spell one though....the nearest is :smt027

Can we have a 'cold sweat' type emoticon so that I can come up with something appropriate when discussing Marco Wentzl and John Barrowman (not in quite the same sentence, I hasten to add!)

I would appreciate a surfing one! But I think it would be too difficult to do, this is the nearest, I think :supz:

Quite like this one, reminds me of Indiana Jones! :smt079

After looking at all of them, now feel rather dizzy! DCat, I echo the Marco Wentzl thought! He he!

Perhaps a tongue in cheek one would stop a few arguments.

Why would we want to stop arguments?

I have to take issue on that one Bill. We MUST stop arguements. And anyone who disagrees with me is plain wrong.
