But Cole isn’t being picked to start so isn’t involved in the first scrum or two ? I could just about understand why we would still start Cole, wouldn’t agree with it at all but sort of understand the now historical rationale of some people’s views …but to have him off the bench doesn’t make any sense?

An opportunity to give the younger players game time in matches and if going wrong, Cole is there for back up and experience perhaps. Cole unlikely to make the next World Cup but still one of the best props available at this moment in time.

It does if you think he offers a set piece solidity that your starter might not be quite as reputed for.

Here's the probable French team to play Scotland:

15. Ramos ; 14. Penaud, 13. Fickou, 12. Danty, 11. Bielle-Biarrey ; 10. Jalibert, 9. Lucu ; 7. Ollivon, 8. Alldritt (cap.), 6. Cros ; 5. Gabrillagues, 4. Woki ; 3. Atonio, 2. Mauvaka, 1. Baille

16. Marchand, 17. S. Taofifenua, 18. Aldegheri, 19. Tuilagi, 20. Roumat, 21. Boudehent, 22. Le Garrec, 23. Moefana

Among the replacements is Toulouse's Alexandre Roumat covering the 2nd and back row. The more elderly on this forum will remember his dad, the formidable Olivier, who won 62 caps between 1989 and 1996.
This'll be his son's first cap so his dad'll maybe have a couple of Rémys to celebrate!!

England 23 unchanged for Wales. Makes sense as we want to get some continuity.

2 week gap then for Scotland. Guessing we might bring back some players returning from injury aka Lawrence, Martin. Probably missing both of them for their physicality. Maybe we’ll see Barbeary too.

Only change is Genge being back on the bench after being replaced late by Obano

To bring the best technical TH off the bench against (presumably) the 2nd choice LH when the game needs closing out? Makes sense to me.

Not convinced that bringing on your better scrummaging but less mobile prop to deal with the lesser scrummaging threat of the opposition second string in the latter stages of the game makes sense.

Usually this is the time when the game is breaking up and you need the prop to be more mobile with fewer concerns that the tight head will be done in the scrum.

However it might suggest a little concern over Theo Dann’s Scrummaging and Borthwick doesn’t want to risk Stuart alongside Dann?

I must say Ben White again showing how very good he is: quick to the breakdown and great pass.
