Broadcasting Women's Internationals

Post by Old Hob »

The BBC has turned down the right to broadcast some of the women's games even though they have been offered the rights for free.

Using the excuse of too short notice to move the endless repeats of "Bargain Hunt", "2nd Home in the Sun" and "I've got lots of money what can I spend it on type programmes".

Apparently ITV did as well. This at a time when channels are fighting each other to show women's football and it having prime time spots at club and international level on BBC and Sky.

This is really not good and is a worrying indication of how little rugby is valued by TV companies outside of big internationals (men).

I am seriously concerned about what may be on the table for the next club rugby deal.

It would never happen but, in my opinion, all English rugby should be sold as a package. You want to show the 6 nations etc then you need to commit to live club games, women's games and highlights shows.

Football, Football, Football, always been too much emphasis on football in this country. To the detriment of pretty much all other sports. Would be ok if we were winning stuff all the time.....

Very poor showing from the main channels though. Hopefully someone will pick it up. Channel 4 maybe.

Sad but true but you only have to look at the viewing figures between the 2 sports

It is a very fair point. The cost of football broadcasting rights just eats up the budget that could be spent on a more diverse sport offering. Think what rights you could have for the estimated £100 million that match of the day costs per contract.

If you held the BBC to their mandate to show programming not represented elsewhere, hence the licence fee funding, they should not have any football rights, all the other channels cover that perfectly well, and they should be investing in other sports.

That said, they are trying to get more funds into Women's football despite club interest remaining low as there are arguments that wages should be higher and so it will not be long before the rights for that are earning more than club rugby if they are not already doing so.

Just some interesting stats. 2018 WC final was watched by 1.1bn! The tournament 3.6bn. Average per game 191m.
El Classico is watched by 75m,180m watch the CL final. PL audience is over 3bn. I know its the sport we love but we've just got to realise that union is a nothing Sport in the scheme of things sadly.

Lack ot time for scheduling should not be a problem, the matches were announced way back and behind the scenes the dates will have been known for longer still so unless the RFU forgot to offer them ..........

Lets hope the home World Cup gets proper respect in 2025.
