If you are retiring and unavailable for the whole tournament, why deprive another player of the opportunity to become part of the team. Professional sport should not allow sentimentality to take over the needs of the team.

Clearly the gulf between the teams was so huge there was no requirement to justify her selection as the best player for a one off match and therefore longer term needs were more important for team development.
I may be wrong but think she announced her retirement date AFTER the squad announcement. It was by most suspected this was her last tournament, but if she hadn't announced it till after the squad is announced what do you do, then drop her from the squad as co-captain and England legend?
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

Red Roses for Sunday's match against Italy at Franklin's Gardens:

Abby Dow
Jess Breach
Lagi Tuima
Tatyana Heard
Claudia MacDonald
Holly Aitchison
Lucy Packer;
Mackenzie Carson
Amy Cokayne
Sarah Bern
Cath O'Donnell
Delaney Burns
Sadia Kabeya
Marlie Packer (c)
Zoe Aldcroft

Replacements: Davies, Crake, Clifford, Beckett, Robinson, Wyrwas, McKenna, Sing

21yo Delaney Burns makes a suprise debut at lock, in a new look engine room with O'Donnell. Aldcroft slides back to 8 in the absence of Cleall and Hunter. Tat Heard unsurprisingly steps in for Amber Reed. 22yo forward Emily Robinson set for a debut off the bench.

England's impressive depth is certainly being tested, but they should still have more than enough to overpower Italy, despite the scrap they put up against France.

Saturday's matches start with Ireland vs France: https://womens.sixnationsrugby.com/prev ... nce/#teams

A few changes for Ireland, including a deserved start for talented flyhalf Dannah O'Brien. France hand a debut to teenager Morgane Bourgeois at fullback. Hard to see anything other than this being a long day at the office for the Irish. France will want to cut loose, after being frustrated in Italy.

Followed by Scotland vs Wales: https://imgur.com/a/0r8G3ez

Both teams largely keeping continuity. Shaping up to be the match of the weekend. They were very evenly matched last year, but Wales' statement win over Ireland suggests they might have pulled some daylight. Scotland will see this as a chance on home turf to get that all-too-elusive win. Despite falling victim to the English steamroller last week, they showed patches of genuine threat in attack, and this should give us a better indication of their progress.

I didn’t think that Burns was in the original squad and indeed, she wasn’t. She’s done well to overtake the likes of Talling who went to the World Cup.

Cheering on the Tigers in Detroit.
Previously a slower, shorter, less good looking version of Tom Croft.

Things looked like they might get interesting when France had a played sent off in the first half, but it only served to show how ahead of the Irish they are. Too much power, too much skill, and Ireland just don't have the weapons to hurt them. 3-53

Very competitive contest between Scotland and Wales. Scotland fought back into the match multiple times, but Wales were just able to keep them at arms length, before finishing them off with a late try. Wales had the edge up front and that was the difference. 22-34

Italy team news: https://twitter.com/Federugby/status/16 ... 8120761348

A handful of changes, but they're likely to struggle in similar areas as they did against France. In the tight 5 and in the kicking game. But they can entertain in attack, and they'll be looking for an improvement on last year's nilling.

Looks like the sun will be back out tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to a cheeky trip to Franklin's Gardens. I'll be sure to wear my Tigers top!

Considering how bad the weather has been recently, it was a lovely day for a game of rugby, and another chance for England to flex. I've been so used to watching the forwards dominate the scoresheet, so its nice to see the back 3 having a field day. England have so many weapons. A nightmare to defend. And it doesn't seem to matter how many England have injured.

Arguably an improvement on recent clashes for Italy, but they looked gassed by 50 minutes.

The tournament returns tomorrow, with two big matches!

Wales vs England kicks things off at a sold-out Arms Park: https://womens.sixnationsrugby.com/prev ... and/#teams

England are bolstered by several World Cup stars back from injury, and Emma Sing gets a first start, filling in for MacDonald. Lark Davies starts at hooker, with Amy Cokayne away with the RAF, meaning May Campbell is set for a debut from the bench. Wales also have one away playing for the RAF, with Williams-Morris replaced by Lowri Norkett on the wing, but they'll likely miss the influence of injured centre Kerin Lake. Its a big test of Wales' progress, and they'll be desperate to prove themselves in front of a record crowd, but realistically their target is probably a try bonus.

Then Italy vs Ireland, in what is a crucial match for both sides: https://womens.sixnationsrugby.com/prev ... and/#teams

Italy had the hardest possible start to the tournament against France and England, but now have the ideal chance to build momentum against a limping Ireland. Though they won't be helped by the loss of their captain Giordano. The IRFU have had another difficult few days of PR regarding their mismanagement of the women's program, and will be desperately hoping the players can defy the odds and restore some pride.

On Sunday, its France vs Scotland: https://womens.sixnationsrugby.com/prev ... and/#teams

Having stuttered away in Italy, France got to flex their real ability in Ireland, despite an early red. They make several changes, including the legendary Jessy Tremouliere starting at 10 in her final tournament, and the return of talismanic number 8 Romane Menager. Its a tough ask for Scotland, but they're boosted by the return of centre Lisa Thomson from 7s duty, and their own talismanic 8 in Jade Konkel-Roberts.

Brutally efficient from England. Wales really took it to them in the first half, and I certainly wouldn't have called that final score at 3-0 after 25.

Some incredible tries from England.

Better showing from Ireland, keeping plenty of possession, but they just don't have many weapons. Italy tackled their hearts out, and scored 3 great tries. 24-7

Getting to the business end of the tournament now, and with the new global tiered WXV competition on the horizon, the final standings here really matter, and every team has something to play for.

First up is Ireland vs England: https://womens.sixnationsrugby.com/prev ... and/#teams

Last week didn't do much to change the feeling that Ireland are likely to end up with the wooden spoon, and there are fears as to just how ugly the score may get. England ring the changes, but still form a formidable side, including returns for Mo Hunt, Talling, MacDonald, Reed and Rowland.

Following that match is a huge clash between Scotland and Italy: https://womens.sixnationsrugby.com/prev ... aly/#teams

Likely to be the game of the weekend. Scotland still desperately searching for a win with see this as a big chance at home. Italy managed to get off the mark last week, and will be hoping to build momentum into an important showdown with Wales in the final round. A few tweaks for both sides, though Italy lose another key backrow in Sgorbini.

On Sunday, Wales travel to France: https://womens.sixnationsrugby.com/prev ... s-2/#teams

Wales will take some heart from the way they challenged England in the first half last week, but disappointed with the way they then fell away without putting points on the board. They'll want to prove a point. France will want to show they're just as formidable as England, heading into the Twickenham showdown, but some concern with star scrumhalf Pauline Bourdon missing from the 23. Wales make 7 changes, including a whole new front row, and talented Gloucester back Lleucu George at centre.
