Re: French rugby - 2022/23
First of all, "Bonne annèe", to you all!
May Tigers make the top 6 at the end of the season and qualify for next season's Champions' Cup, as I think it's unlikely that there'll retain their Premiership title and I hope they make at least the quarter finals in Europe. Not very optimistic expectations but realistic, I believe.
Back to French rugby! Round 174 of the Top 14 was played at the weekend:
Clermont 13 Toulouse 32 (This bp win was Toulouse's first league win at Clermont for a long time. Encouraging for Tigers!)
Bayonne 23 Toulon 18 (Bayonne move up to an impressive 5th place)
Castres 26 Racing 26 (Castres came so close to losing their 28-match unbeaten record at home in the Top14)
Lyon 27 Brive 30 (The result of the round as Brive are no longer in last place after a gutsy win in Lyon)
Perpignan 10 La Rochelle 29 (Perpignan slip to last place)
Stade Français 37 Pau 3 (SF consolidate their 2nd position)
Bordeaux/Bègles 40 Montpellier 10 (The champions ship 40 points. Sounds familiar?!!!)
1 Toulouse 49
2 S Français 42
3 La Rochelle 37
4 Racing 37
5 Bayonne 35
6 B/B 35
7 Montpellier 34
8 Toulon 31
9 Lyon 30
10 Castres 28
11 Clermont 27 (a really disappointing season for Clermont sees them firmly in ther bottom half of the table)
12 Pau 27
13 Brive 21 (Brive off the bottom but still unsure of staying in the Top14 at the end of the season)
14 Perpignan
Round 15 is next weekend before two weekends of Champions' Cup.
Saturday 7th
Bordeaux/Bègles v Bayonne
Clermont v Perpignan (Clermont will surely rest key players before playing Tigers on Friday the 13th!!!)
Brive v Toulon ( a third win on the trot for Brive? Hope so)
Pau v Lyon
S Français v Castres
La Rochelle v Toulouse (Toulouse can afford to lose and will probably rest players before the trip to Sale)
Sunday 8th
Montpellier v Racing

Re: French rugby - 2022/23
I should imagine the news of Penaud announcing his transfer from Clermont to Bordeaux hasn't improved team spirit. He was moved inside to 13 v Toulouse, but it didn't improve matters, I guess. I'm interested to know how Dupont went at fly-half for Toulouse!

Re: French rugby - 2022/23
There was no lack of effort among the Clermont players but they ain’t the team they were. Camille Lopez and Morgan Parra have gone, their captain Arthur Iturria will leave at the end of the season, as will Damian Penaud. Having said that, they’ll go and beat Tigers now. Antoine Dupont could play anywhere in the backs and he played well yesterday. Toulouse are away at La Rochelle next Saturday and then in the Champions’ Cup, away to Sale and home to Munster. As I said above, they’ll probably send a changed team to La Rochelle and be at full strength for Sale and Munster, where Dupont will wear 9.

Toulouse have already announced that internationalists Julian Marchand, Antoine Dupont and Anthony Jelonch will be on holiday for Saturday’s game at La Rochelle.

Watched the Clermont game. They gave it a go but were outplayed.
A team rebuilding itself and a good time to play them even if we do have our own problems.

France second row/wing forward, Cameron Woki will miss all of the 6N due to injury. He’s been a regular in Fabien Galthié’s team and will be missed. Step forward, Thibault Flament of Toulouse!
