French rugby - 2022/23

Post by Robespierre »

The new Top14 season gets under way on the first weekend of September.
Newly promoted Bayonne have a tough opener away to Toulon, but the big matches are surely current champions Montpellier away to European Champions La Rochelle on Saturday evening, and on Sunday evening, Bordeaux at home to Toulouse.

03/09/2022
Racing 92 v Castres Olympique
Rugby Club Toulonnais v Bayonne
CA Brive-Corrèze v Lyon LOU
Section Paloise(Pau) v USA Perpignan
Stade Français v ASM Clermont
Stade Rochelais v Montpellier Hérault Rugby
04/09/2022
Union Bordeaux-Bègles v Stade Toulousain

ProD2 begins on the last weekend of August and there'll be several teams competing for the end of season play-offs, including former French Champions Biarritz and Agen.

An interesting development, doubt it will happen here though, not sure clubs think much of a lot of our refs, well the fans don't for certain lol.

The Clubs do use the Referees for some sessions prior to the season to assist them with how new / modified rules will be managed during the game.

The new season in ProD2 begins this evening. Here are the opening fixtures:

Thursday 25th August
Biarritz v US Oyonnax
Friday 26th August
RC Massy Essonne v Rouen Normandie Rugby
Soyaux-Angoulême XV v RC Vannes
FC Grenoble v Béziers
Mont-de-Marsan v Aurillac
Colomiers Rugby v Carcassonne
Montauban v Nevers
Provence Rugby v SU Agen

Biarritz and Oyonnax, who are playing this evening, could be two of the clubs vying for promotion to the Top14. In my opinion, the level of ProD2 is very competitive and is superior to the English Championship and is a good reflection of the healthy state of the French national side.

Former Tigers, Luke Hamilton and Steve Mafi are both on Oyonnax’s squad for the new season, but neither are playing this evening.

Many thanks for all your information Robespierre. I’m hoping to catch the Bordeaux game as part of my holiday, so long as I can negotiate their website on my phone! It sounds like a good one to watch. Which players should I look out for?

There could be a head to head of the French XV halfbacks, Lucu/Jalibert for Bordeaux/Bègles and Dupont/ Ntamack for Toulouse. The match is at 21h05 Sunday evening so the sides may not be announced until Saturday.

Here are the results of this weekend's first round of the Top14, in which Toulouse scraped a one point win in Bordeaux, and Bordeaux had two penalty attempts in the last few minutes, but sadly (for Bordeaux supporters!) missed them. The other big match of the opening weekend was European Champions La Rochelle's win over French champions Momtpellier 26-22.

Bordeaux/Bègles 25 Toulouse 26
Brive 27 Lyon 31
Racing92 25 Castres 19
Stade Français 24 Clermont 18
Toulon 40 Bayonne 25
Pau 16 Perpignan 14 (11 points from Zach Henry including the winning penalty in 79th minute)
La Rochelle 26 Montpellier 24

Round 2 is next weekend:

Lyon v La Rochelle
Perpignan v Brive
Castres v Stade Français
Clermont v Pau
Bayonne v Racing
Montpellier v Bordeaux/Bègles
Toulouse v Toulon
