Clermont (Away) - Sunday 10th April 2022

Post by ay2oh »

Is anyone going to Clermont and if so how are you getting there. There are multiple options from different airports and also Eurostar but as we won’t know the day of the match for a few weeks yet it makes its very difficult to know which is the best option

Hi, we have been twice, the first time we got really cheap flights to Limoges and hired a car and drove to Clermont-Ferrand, we stayed in a two star hotel in Montferrand (the old town), we had a fabulous time mixed with the local fans, only a 15 minute walk to the stadium and a 30 minute walk the city centre.
The second time we went by coach, it’s a long old way but enjoyed the trip with plenty of lubrication. We stayed close to the city centre and close to the night life.
One of our favourite European rugby destinations.

Been once, very similar to your first trip, flew to Limoges, hire car, but stayed at a small self catering apartment right in the centre, above a supermarket so self catering was easy. Tram to the ground, lovely city centre. Really enjoyed it.

We went back in 2014, decided to make a week of it. So we flew from East Midlands to Limoges and then hired a car for the drive to Clermont. Had a fantastic time, the Clermont fans are some of the best in Europe.

We are going to go again this year. The best option is usually to fly to Lyon and either bus, train or car hire to Clermont. We now own a campervan so we are thinking of driving over this year with a couple of stops on the way.

Desert Island Discs?

Driving to Clermont is easy, I've driven down to the Pyrenees loads of times Usually go Limoges/Brive but have gone Clermont way before as its the road to the Millau Viaduct.
Driving round Paris* can be a pain in the .... but the rest of it is dead easy driving.
*Can avoid Paris by going via Rouen but I find Paris way is generally quicker, especially if you hit it very early or late to avoid the traffic. Or could go Reims/Dijon/Lyon route.
Motorways in France are great! With a camper it's also really easy to stop over night in the Aires/service stations.

Just to warn you if you decide to drive via Paris - the French now have a clear air policy and you have to get a sticker thing like our old vehicle tax sticker. Only a few cities are part of this scheme, there is little publicity, but you could get fined. I found out about it somehow - even friends in France didn’t know! Google Crit’air. It is at least easy to apply and pay for (yes, fancy that, it’s not free!) not sure which other cities are on the list, so might be worth checking.

Also warning re speed restrictions. We got done for 115 in a 110 limit - we in England don’t fine unless it is higher over the limit. And the cameras are not brightly coloured so you don’t spot them.

That said - lovely country! And great wine.and cheese.

Checked the flights to Limoges, currently only flying two days a week from East Midlands Sat & Tuesday.

🤞 Hoping for a Sunday game therefore as the flights will be perfect.
Arrive Sat, hire car to Drive, Sun game day, Monday recover/tourism. Head back Tuesday.

Flights currently £102 on skyscanner.
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.
