Mercer would be an excellent signing, but I can't see us being able to afford him as a 2nd choice 8. Or him wanting to come as a 2nd choice 8. Probably one of those where his agent gets in touch with all the Prem clubs, we say "yeah we're looking for a back rower", have a bit of a chat, even though it's unlikely to happen. Maybe we are talking to him about 23/24 season, maybe that's when Wiese's contract expires and realistically we know that his value will have shot up and it's not 100% certain that we can keep him, so we look at alternatives. Might be a similar situation with Gopperth - I would imagine both players are having conversations with a lot of clubs, but Tigers have the biggest fan base, so linking to us in the press gets the most clicks...
With the salary cap and the fact that generally players only move when contracts expire, it's probably a lot less like the football way where you might only speak to the players you specifically want - it's a constant juggling act and I expect you have to look at all the options available, particularly at this point in the season when you might have a few players who are yet to re-sign, and a few targets yet to sign, so you need to look at other options.
We keep saying we have Lancaster as 10/12 cover, but if Borthwick thought he was ready I'm sure we would have seen more of him.

I thought we gave him a 3LE18 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 23, 2022 4:34 pmMaybe we only gave Burns a 1 year contract?Rugbygramps wrote: ↑Sun Jan 23, 2022 2:21 pm I must admit I don’t see the sense in the Gopperth signing. With the arriving Pollard, Hegarty, Burns and Lancaster we have cover at 10, and cover in the centres too even if Socino is off and assume some cap being made available with Kobe’s van Wyk off.
My worry would be does it signify Wigglesworth moving on and Gopperth is coming in as a player coach
Given the past he wouldn’t have come for a 1

"Ruck" reckon Bristol are the favourites to sign Mercer but Tigers and Quins are also interested.
Believe nothing 'til it's in black and white.

Agree, from the article the whole point of him returning is for England recognition.
He won't get that unless he's a starting 8.
We have Wiese as our starting 8
Quins have Dombrant as theirs
As clubs go those are probably 2 of the clubs that make least sense for him..
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

Taking in to account Wiese’s time with the Boks, plus time suspended, Mercer might get plenty of game time
Re: LEICESTER TIGERS 2021/22 SQUAD/TRANSFERS/CONTRACTS: Lord of the Mauls
Mercer is a fab player but I can’t see there is space for him at the Tigers, if the Berg or Wiese leaves then he would be ideal!

Mercer on rugby pod confirms he's staying in France another year and who knows what will happen after.

Rolling Maul Podcast suggesting Tigers are in "advanced talks" with both Marler and Radwan.
Hard to tell credibility as with all rumours, but I seem to recall the Rolling Maul Podcast getting Pollard's signing right...?!?!?
We can only hope!!
