Additional lineout option would be my guess. Having the two second rows and Hanro as the only lineout options would leave us without a ball carrier in the backline so with Wells you have three and still a big forward in the backline.Jimmy Skitz wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:24 pm in what universe is Wells a better back row player than Taufua?

Do STs get a match pass from BT for this one? Haven’t received the usual email.

Second half impact. Wells is there to take the sting out of the Castres rolling maul and forwards, should bolster our rolling maul as well. Second half we'll want to up the tempo and try to take advantage of the tiring Castres pack. Taufua and Wallace off the bench should both be high impact that will add mobility and physicality. Taufua also had a lot of strapping round his knee last time out. We might just be managing that.Jimmy Skitz wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:24 pm in what universe is Wells a better back row player than Taufua?

I'm sure I've seen Taufua as a line out jumper before, we lose far more in general play not having Taufua then we will gain by having Wells in the lineout at 6longlivethecrumbie wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:36 pmAdditional lineout option would be my guess. No. The deal with BT only covered Premiership games.aslongaswebeatsaints wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:45 pm Do STs get a match pass from BT for this one? Haven’t received the usual email.
As ST holders we would still have needed to buy a ticket for this game.

Not long to wait to see who got it right. It is a close call in the back line but I am happy to go with the selection made.Jimmy Skitz wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:50 pmI'm sure I've seen Taufua as a line out jumper before, we lose far more in general play not having Taufua then we will gain by having Wells in the lineout at 6longlivethecrumbie wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:36 pmAdditional lineout option would be my guess. The Castres team for Sunday has a lot of players who are relatively unknown to me. Their club captain, Babillot, starts on the bench. Tyler Ardron and Matthew Tierney are Canadian internationals. Urdapilleta is an Argie international who can kick goals but isn't known for his tackling, so maybe Tigers can expoit this weakness? All that needs to be said about Saffer Kockott has already been said.
Many of them are regulars in the Top14 so shouldn't be underestimated. I believe them to be a workmanlike team who defend well and like to get in the faces of the opposition.
Castres starting XV:
15. Julien Dumora, 14. Geoffrey Palis, 13. Thomas Combezou, 12. Florian Vialelle, 11. Filipo Nakosi, 10. Benjamin Urdapilleta, 9. Rory Kockott (cap.) ; 7. Kevin Kornath, 8. Tyler Ardron, 6. Baptiste Delaporte ; 5. Hans N'Kinsi, 4. Ryno Pieterse ; 3. Matthew Tierney, 2. Gaetan Barlot, 1. Antoine Tichit.
Replacements :
16. Pierre Colonna, 17. Julius Nostadt, 18. Wilfrid Hounkpatin, 19. Dorian Clerc, 20. Mathieu Babillot, 21. Maama Vaipulu, 22. Bastien Guillemin, 23. Vilimoni Botitu.
The Tigers' squad appears to be the strongest available and I would hope that they'll get the win, but I'm not altogether overflowing with confidence. Having said that, they'll probably give Castres a good stuffing!!

I would guess that Taufua has a knock and isn't likely to be able to do a full 80 at 100% intensity. Given that he and Wells will therefore be doing part of the game each, it makes more sense to have Taufua as the impact sub, probably very early in the 2nd half. Being on the bench doesn't mean anyone is saying he isn't as good as Wells, it's more a case of which part of the match you want him to be on the field for.Jimmy Skitz wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:50 pmI'm sure I've seen Taufua as a line out jumper before, we lose far more in general play not having Taufua then we will gain by having Wells in the lineout at 6longlivethecrumbie wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:36 pmAdditional lineout option would be my guess. We have Nakosi to look out for on the wing and Ardron at 8 will be a handful but I’m hooing we can get a good result over this Castres side.

Bet we win by 20 points.
French teams, unless they have real pedigree, normally implode in Ireland or England....

Castres last appearance in Europe was an excellent win, 33-27 at Worcester.
The way we’ve been playing Castres will travel hoping to win and I’m sure Borthwick will ensure our players know they will have to play their best game yet to win.
