Back Row

Post by newport tiger »

I've just been watching England's great victory from 2003(no not that one, when we beat NZ) and a thought crossed my mind. If you were to pick a fantasy back row it would undoubtedly include one or more NZ/Southern hemisphere players but what if you had to pick a back row unit? I personally believe the Hill/Back/Dallaglio back row is the best back row unit that ever played together, i'm looking forward to peoples opinions especially given that we here at Leicester have seen some pretty good combinations.

Moody Back Corry started against Munster in 2002, great backrow unit.

Plus beginning of the decade you forget in the World Cup year we were stacked in the forwards. Have many other clubs had so many quality options ever in the premiership? Croft Newby Waldrom Mafi Salvi Crane Woods.

Kaino, Reed, McCaw.

Any backrow with Michael Jones in it.

Jeffery, White, Calder.

Tigers wise so many options, but individually Miller, Richards, Kronfeld.

I share your admiration of Michael Jones and would be tempted to extend your sentiments to any back row with Richie McCaw in it but we are talking back row units that compliment each other.

The NZ one goes without saying but the Scottish one is a strong contender that is often overlooked!

The Croft, Wallace, Heaslip backrow and the backrow of Burger, Brüssow & Spies it went up against in 2009 are both criminally underrated.

France 2011 back row of Bonnaire dusautoir and harinordoquy - sheer class individually and really well balanced together.

Arrr you must all be youngsters.

You must be if you weren’t you wouldn’t dream of listing the greatest back row forwards and omit Jean Pierre Rives.

I wouldn't mind seeing a back row of Jack Willis, Tom Curry and Ben Earl.

Have to agree with Jean Pierre Rives. Also surprised that Sergio Parisse, Mervyn Davies and Fergus Slattery don't get a mention. The latter two may be an age thing as with Rives.
Tigers for the premiership and European Cup. Get behind the team and make some noise!!

I can see why you think that but in my view, 2 breakdown operators are enough, you either have a flanker that is a lineout pro and does the nuts & bolts like Peter O’Mahoney or our Hanro Liebenberg or a 6 with two breakdown operators or you have a big ball carrying flanker with two breakdown operators.

The opposition would surely have a bearing - either in terms of a threat to be nullified or an advantage to be gained.

The best back row ever imo was Kaino/McCaw/Read

Kaino was arguably the best of the 3 at his peak. They really were better than their sum total.
