Tom Youngs - lineouts
I thought his reaction to the topic of crooked throws at line out by Adam Whitty on the LTRS maybe gives us an insight as to why the lineout has been a mess for so long, they always tell us that they have in depth squad meetings and thrash out all aspects of their game, but i can't see the lineout being discussed much if every time it's mentioned he spits his dummy out.
A legitimate question that i would have liked answered.

Re: Tom Youngs - linouts
Whenever OTY throws a crooked ball everyone shouts him down, but does anyone know what his stats are? I'll be surprised if they are poor as he rarely throws a wonky one compared to his early days. In the past few seasons I've seen much more poor timing/jumping/catching as well as dire judgements from the lineout caller which are the responsibility of ALL 4 key players in the line out. Those errors are more of a concern than an occasional wonky throw IMO.

Guessing it is Leicester Tigers Radio Show as Adam Whitty is a presenter....

Spoke with 'Taf' Polota-Nau during the Calvisano game - he clearly felt the lineout was being "over complicated". With recent coaching changes, that issue should be resolved!
Happy days clearing straw from the pitch before the Baa-Baas games! KBO

Re: Tom Youngs - lineouts
The issue for me is that Youngs is undroppable for whatever reason, even though his performances haven't been up to much for a few seasons. We keep getting decent prospects in, they don't get any game time and then leave as soon as their contracts are up. The situation is so dire that we had our other international hooker fly to the other side of the world mid-season to get some minutes in.
Re: Tom Youngs - linouts
Is he though? His delivery is so terrible that, when I first heard it, I thought it might be Alan Partridge!
In my defence, I was left unsupervised….

Re: Tom Youngs - lineouts
I do not understand but then I am not a coach, they should be able to put thier finger on it and resolve it but season after season it remains unresolved.
I cannot tell if our shocking lineout is a symptom or a cause but it kills us most games and takes away any momentum and removes an option, we all complain about mindlessly kicking the ball to the opposition but with such a poor lineout if we kick it dead we have no chance of getting it back at least with an up and under there is a chance of a knock on.
It is not just catching the ball at the lineout, we are poor at attacking off it as well, which is down to us having no confidence we are going to win our own throw, so we start off quite unprepared when we do!

Some time ago George Chuter explained( Hookers’ Union!) that problems in the line out aren’t totally the fault of the hooker; props and locks have huge roles to play. Ayerza was one of the best props in the world not just because of his work in the scrum but his lifting at the lineout was renounced. Geoff Parling too was an incredible lineout specialist.
Sadly, it is another area where Tigers has gone backwards.
Forwards not functioning as a unit and backs who kick the ball away too much.
Lots of talent in the squad that needs to be told to express themselves.
Tigers’ coaches need to concentrate on us not fearing the opposition.
Easier said than done.
I shall be at Welford Road v Exeter but until Tigers become brave enough to win games then games will be lost.

I do agree that the shackles need taking off and heads up rugby needs to be played

Re: Tom Youngs - lineouts
If the lineout is actually straight then without knowing the call that was being run it is difficult to know where the fault lies. The coaches should know what the call has been and then analyse who did what compared to what the call was. I have coached colts and we got the club first team in to go through their calls. They may have well been describing nuclear physics and we had go simplify things. When we did simplify the lads could fun the calls but some teams read the play and successfully competed for the ball. That then saps confidence and players start delaying the move and the synchronisation of moves, jumps and throws goes to pot. It is a fine balance. The other issues is how good the opposition is during training. If your team mates do not compete as well as Exeter do then how do you train well enough to gain confidence? Same goes for defence. If you are not tested by open play and running lines then you cannot cope when it happens in a game.
It was interesting to look at the intensity of the european games at the weekend. A Leinster player commented that they train at a higher speed and intensity than they play so they can cope with play.
