Costelow (and other Tigers on loan)

Post by RagingBull »

Interesting to read in the rugby paper that Costelow got 8/10 joint highest rated Ampthill player in their 38 - 47 loss to Jersey.
Costelow scored a try was 5/5 conversions and 1/2 penalties.

Not bad for the youngster.

Elsewhere In the championship
Lavin, Smith and Gough played in Yorkshire loss to Hartbury
and
Joe Thomas, Cameron Jordan and Jonny McPhillips are playing for Nottingham in todays game v Bedford

In national League 1
Dimen was on the bench for Moseley loss v Cambridge

National league 2 North
Lines, Manz and Law played in the students win v Scunthorpe with Law getting himself a try.
Ashworth started in Hinckley win against Huddersfield
In the South
Whitecombe started and Eveleigh was on the bench in the Lions win against Old Redcliff.

Joe Browning scored a try in Loughborugh students Bcus game v Hartbury.

Thanks, RB. Good to have feedback of these young players.

Great experience for them. The National leagues can be very physical with not quite the pace of championship or premiership.
Would like to see Jordan get some time with the senior squad along with Martin as we need to bring them through.

Interesting to see McPhillips at Nottingham thought he’d gone to Doncaster

Tigers recalled him from Doncaster and sent him on loan to Nottingham. Unsure what that was about to be honest. I think he was playing 15 at Doncaster and Tigers wanted him to play more 10?

Much happier to see the development team going and playing senior rugby. Gets them used to the physicality as often the big step up is the young lads being used to bumping or handing people off and all of a sudden they can't and so need to adapt their technique. I didn't like how towards the end of Cockers reign we never sent anyone on loan unless they were being effectively banished (ala Lewington). Too many good players have had useful loan spells, Tom Youngs and Dan Cole for starters.

Write up from Ampthill. Costelow mentioned in every other sentence and in virtually every Ampthill score. Freddie Steward played at 15 and gets a 7/10 but not mentioned in the write up.

Says a lot about Steward and Costelow though.

At the same age Tigers had the likes of Hardwick, Simmons, Worth etc playing at National League 2/1 level.

Great to hear that the youngsters are doing so well in a tough division, especially at that age.

To be honest, Worth, Simmons and Hardwick are not likely to be more than decent Premiership players (please, prove me wrong!) so it's exciting that the next round of youngsters are perhaps showing a bit more potential.

It does say a lot about them. In cold and wet conditions for the 15 not to be mentioned suggests a solid display which is exactly what you want to see. The write up mentions Costelow setting up the first try by a charge down which I liked as well, shows real hunger in defence for someone who isn't the biggest. Very positive signs. The pair of them very much have the potential to go on to the very top level of the game.

Hopefully we'll see a bit more from them either next weekend or in the PRC.

TBF he did get a mention
Ampthill Head Coach Paul Turner commented “I was proud of how hard we fought against a well organised and experienced Jersey side, however, this was a harsh lesson, give penalties away against this standard of opposition and we will be punished. There were some excellent performances with Costelow, Steward and Grimoldby all excelling and some fine back play. There is, however, a great deal to work on.”

Haha to be fair RB it was such a long report I stopped at the coaches comments and just flicked down to the player ratings.

Potential worry could the CVC money be used to lure players like Reffell and Costelow back into Wales?

IMO if both are not signed to 5 year contracts (Even if we overpay in the short term) then it shows how short sighted those above in the contract department are.

Agreed tie them down and tie them down early. We can pay them the going rate now with clauses in the contract to increase their pay as the develop or reach certain landmarks (e.g. number of appearances). Costelow really does look like he's going to be a serious player.

He's still only 18. Another stint off the bench and probably for a bit longer than Vs Cardiff. It's great he's already starring in the Championship because the physicality in that league will be a step up from what he's used to in the development teams.
