Canada Embarrassing?
Pundits getting angry with canada at half time for playing badly and making a poorly judged clear out. What do you expect when a team with players from below the championship have to play NZ and SAfrica in 6 days, without having the opportunity to play either of them outside world cups?
If you want a competitive world cup you need a one tier system like in football where the bigger nations have to play the smaller ones regularly and cant poach the best players from smaller countries by paying them more. The system that has elite athletes playing against semi pro players in such a high intensity contact sport is the embarrassment, not the part time players and less wealthy nations who get screwed by it.
World rugby and all the top nations complicit in this system should hang their heads in shame, not patting themselves and each other on the back for racking up big scores.
Time to choose, rugby. Do you really want a more global game like you claim, or do you just want to protect the establishment?

Yep, agree entirely!

I reckon if the Canadian squad had the proper platform then it'd be a proper contest.
Japan are the proof.

Re: Canada Embarrassing?
But there would be complaints if the world cup was just 16 teams.
I'm not sure what World Rugby can really do. They can definitely provide more fixtures for tier two countries against tier one, but unless there is meaningful support for rugby in the country then it will never be more than just lower standard players against the big teams. Canada getting hammered 5 times a year against England/France/SA/NZ isn't going to help them either.
Look how much money is in the Japanese club game. That is the main reason for Japan's success, nothing to do with World Rugby.

That's exactly the point, if you have the money then you can compete.Cardiff Tig wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2019 1:04 pm But there would be complaints if the world cup was just 16 teams.

If a fairer competition is wanted then spread the money for others to train professionally.
I'm not sure certain people would want that though otherwise the semi-finals could potentially look like Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Georgia.
The competition as it stands is a bit of a joke.
Today's game was a waste of time.

But Canada aren't poor. They have more money than all the Pacific Islands combined and are one of the richest nations on the planet, they just don't care about rugby.
What you're suggesting is that countries should privately fund others which is a non-starter. Very few tier-one unions have money to spare to fund others.

Re: Canada Embarrassing?
+1, this world cup has been decidedly short of exciting matchups as the gap between top drawer and 'tier two' teams grows wider. Although as other posters have stated if we're going to dump loads of money into development I probably wouldn't start with Canada.Tiglon wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2019 12:30 pm Pundits getting angry with canada at half time for playing badly and making a poorly judged clear out. Despite being a Commonwealth nation, the Canadians have always preferred the gridiron version of football to rugby, although the MLR may help to revigorate interest in the sport, especially in the Francophone regions.

Totally agree JP14.
The place to start is the Pacific Ocean islands, and the Australasian nations, along with let’s be honest England and France need to be worked with to stop the cream of these nations players be selected for the larger countries, and more money to be pumped in to help with grass routes rugby and coaching structure for Fiji, Tonga, Samoa.
Worthy mention to South Africa as well who have been working with their Namibian neighbours to develop the game

Re: Canada Embarrassing?
Perhaps the Sunwolves should join the Fijian Drua in creating a Pacific Club Competition?

Re: Canada Embarrassing?
Another joke of a match this morning.
64 minutes and the Scots are winning 47-0.
What a complete waste of time.
The Scots can even afford a shocker of a forward pass which the so called best ref completely missed and had to rescued by the TMO.

For the love of God, get out of the negativity cave! We, as armchair viewers for the world cup, get the joy of in line camera angles for most plays and the virtue of a second/third/fourth glance. From his angle, as it's highly unlikely he was bang in line and completely up with the line of the pass, it probably looked fine. The TMO did his job, as he's supposed to, and the right decision was made. What is your problem? Should every ref get every decision 100% right 100% of the time otherwise they're rubbish and shouldn't be reffing the game? It's no wonder that sports are losing grass roots refs and umpires with such expectations
Re: Canada Embarrassing?
Yes looked flat in real time, that's what TMO are for!
