I'd say he's better in the dark arts,I've seen TH outwit Genge, but Ellis is certainly a more destructive scrummager. You rarely see Marler drive a TH backwards although with Cole locking the scrum out it does allow Genge to attack.

Not sure how relevant any scrum debate is these days anyway what with refs being under instruction to get the ball in play.
All that is needed is enough to hold the push against the head, the ball is fed to the back row and it's play on.
If Marler was some sort of super scrummager that wins matches then I might get it, but that he isn't!
Agree with above though, Genge is more destructive anyway!

God created rugby so footballers have heros too

No, its that Elitism at work again, Marler must have gone to a Public School and Genge didn't.

Went to Quins away at the end of the season and, much as it pains me to say it, Marler outshine Cole and Genge. He didn’t have a good game v Tigers at Welford Road in December but the whole Quins’ team was poor.
Credit where credit is due as he has become more disciplined whereas Cole and Genge gave some ridiculous penalties away in quite a few games. Some were very costly.
Genge needs a full season in Tigers’ team to show he can be disciplined and do more in the loose.
Dan Cole has been one of the best Tigers props but the modern game needs more dynamism and good handling skills from all forwards: that is what makes Sarries so efficient as their forwards can play whatever type of play the game dictates.

I remember reading 2 different press reports after the game at Quinn’s, 1 reported their props on top one reported ours so you call it how you see it.Ian Cant wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2019 9:40 pm Went to Quins away at the end of the season and, much as it pains me to say it, Marler outshine Cole and Genge. Genge problem is more frustration than ill discipline and also can drift out of the game at times, but is a real talent.
Cole is what he is you can’t just reinvent yourself at 32.
IMO all this talk about him giving penalties away is a smokescreen, of course he does, all players do, but over his career he has won considerably more than he has given away

You fell for that one!DCATsOLDMAN wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2019 8:52 amIf you think that Marler went to a public school, you, obviously haven't heard him speak! According to Wikipedia, he went to Heathfield Community College in Sussex!

Funny how absence turns distinctly average players into far better ones than the reality.
Marler is too big and immobile for a modern loose head but lacks the scrummaging power to be a tight head.
Another example is Anthony Watson on Ok international wing (but no way near to May or Nowell in the pecking order and as a full back an utter liability under the high ball) Miss a season with injury, come back limping and slow, but that growth in reputation enough to get him in the squad.
I guess those who play are open to having their deficiencies exposed, those who don’t have their flaws forgotten about.
Is the Cipriani thing another example - tried, tested and found wanting at England level and unable to take the step up. Yet at club level remains outstanding so after a year or two out of the test arena the press demand his return.

Wow this is very encouraging and will no doubt inspire his players!

I guess our pool depends on the French really, USA could pull off a shock, shame Manoa had to retire.
