Re: Smithy
A stalwart of the club.
At his best in his early years on the wing but played much of his career at centre because that was what was needed of him.

Re: Smithy
Remember us playing Ulster at the height of Trimble's powers. I think Trimble got one run all match as Smithy did an awesome 1-on-1 on him, every time he got the ball....Crunch!
A truly great servant and far better than any used to credit. He DID pass the ball now and again, which is more than Danny did.

Re: Smithy
A sad day, but perhaps not too surprising as Matt has got to 'that sort of age'.
What a great and loyal career! 14 years, 227 games, 30 tries, with Dosser the first dad/son to make 100 and 200 appearances, Play Offs, Finals, 3x Prem winning team member, a memorable centre partnership with Ant Allen, and playing so many other legendary Tigers 3/4s and other players. Never shy to get stuck in to tackles, rucks and mauls as required. Never less than committed. Going out with his boots on. And now following Ant to be a fantastic role model for the up and coming lads in the Academy.
Thanks, Smithy, and best wishes to you and your family.

Re: Smithy
Brilliant servant to the club. Lots of great memories but will recall one older one and one recent one :
V Saints at home when we were in our pomp and Smithy ripping the ball out of their centre’s hands, or was it Hartley, some 30 metres or so out and storming down the wing to score in a great home win.
Secondly, this season’s home game v Sarries when he raced onto a kick through and turned on the old gas to score in a good comeback but not a win.
Glad he will be coaching the Academy lads, if that’s true.
Will have great pleasure cheering him in the last home game v Bath.

A true Tigers legend!
Thanks for everything Smithy. A player we could always rely on to slot into the team and give a performance.
Good luck in your Academy Head Coach role. What a person for our youngsters to look up to.

The try 30 seconds in sums up Matt Smith for me. Carries Ashton over the line from 15m out. Mr 110%. Sadly there's no montage of the 100s of tackles he's put in to keep us in games.
