Plans for next season

Post by Tweentown »

Leicester Tigers have avoided relegation by the narrowest of margins. Regardless of the points difference at the end of the season, if the referee had not awarded a penalty in the 84th minute of the game against Newcastle it is likely that we would have been relegated. It was that close!

So we look forward to next season in the Premiership but we must not now blindly go into next season assuming that things will magically get better with a few squad changes – a coherent, clear, realistic and deliverable strategic turnaround plan needs to be put in place and properly implemented with the utmost urgency. The concern is whether or not we have the right personnel in place to make the right decisions and implement them.

Strategy can be defined as ‘a course of action including the specification of resources required to achieve a specific objective’. Strategy normally fails because of insufficient resources (quality or quantity) or because of poor implementation of the plan. In my view both of these factors have played a role in Tigers poor performance.

Player resources – many believe the current squad is not good enough. We may be encouraged by the recruitment plan for next year, but this alone may well not bring success.

Coaching resources – coaches have an important role in ‘implementation’ of the plan on the field of play. Many are critical of the current coaching set up. It is certainly a fact that the Head Coach has limited coaching experience.

Senior Management resources – it is senior management who are responsible for overall strategy, decision making and provision of required resources. I would suggest they do not have a good record over recent years.

The UK code of corporate governance for UK Plc’s states that ‘The Board and its committees should have the balance of skills, experience, independence and knowledge of the company to enable them to discharge their duties and responsibilities effectively’. It goes on to state: ‘The Board should undertake a formal and rigorous annual evaluation of its own performance, that of its committees and individual directors.’

It would be interesting to know the outcome of such a review but I would suggest that a starting point has to be the recruitment of a senior, experienced, proven and respected Director of Rugby who is at the table as an executive Board member with overall and full responsibility for rugby operations and team matters and performance.

Any Board that has had Digby Jones near it is not fit for purpose. Only saving grace it wasn't Sugar or Green.

Or alternately, if Newcastle had looked after their possession better rather than presenting an opportunity for our classy operator (Thompson) to exploit and give the Ref the grounds to rightly award a penalty as the Falcons transgressed, then they would have done better. The Ref didn't do us a favour, we (Thompson) earned it - irrespective of how poorly we played in patches that night or more persistently throughout the season.

Narrowest of margins would have seen us going into the final game needing a result to stay up, we don't have that stress (fortunately) ergo - not the narrowest of margins.

Agree fully about a necessary review and appropriate action though. :smt023

A lot more time must be allocated to the lineout and maul, practise until the players become sick of them. The Brumbies maul, that is just technique and practice.

When available, review Pat Howards report. Implement a change and get a game ethic that every one from XV1 down to the boot boys(sorry persons) buy into and understand their role.
We have top players who are under utilised. You don't get a pedigree dog for someone else to bark.

Get Welford Road a fortress and get the turnstiles turning again.
Recruitment must be planned and not knee jerk. For players and coaching staff.

As a foot note..... I don't mind Tigers getting beaten by a better team. As the Prem has shown all teams can get beaten. Its the manner of the defeat that hurts. No dog in attack. No heads up rugby. No plan B or C.

We lack " quality and quantity" at player level, and " quality " at coaching and BOD level.
