Guy Novès may be looking for a job!

Post by Robespierre »

An Industrial Tribunal in Toulouse has awarded former France coach Guy Novès €1m, against the Fédération Rugby Française for unfair dismissal. The Tribunal rejected the FFR's case that Novès was guilty of serious misconduct. He was coach from 2015-2017 before being sacked. He won seven of his fourteen matches in charge, which is rather better than the current coach who by these standards, ought to be beheaded on the Guillotine!!

So a proven first rate coach could be looking for a job. Thoughts!!

Not sure first rate is the way to describe any French coach at the moment. From what you hear French coaching has stayed still for the past 30 years. Leaving French teams as ill disciplined and unstructured shambles.

On second thoughts sounds like he’d fit right in!

Novès is a legend here in Toulouse having guided Stade Toulousain to French Champions on numerous occasions between 1993 and 2015 and four times European champions, so calling him a first rate coach is perfectly justified.
However, the French XV has been at loggerheads with the club structure and the owners of the clubs who wield too much influence. Change this and the National side will once again be a force to be reckoned with.

All fair points. How's his English?

We wouldn't want another Claude Puel..........

Strange post! R92,Toulouse,Clermont and others all have French head coaches and play fantastic rugby. Sometimes I think people just go on the international team when discussing French rugby, the two are night and day. I love watching the Top14,that and SR eclipse anything the GP has to offer imo.

Totally agree.

Plus the fact that the French national team has pretty much destroyed the reputation of the last 4 coaches suggests there might be a more deep-seated issue!

This is the problem that Tigers have at the moment, they couldn't do right for doing wrong....

I'd love Geordan to do well next season and turn the club around, he's a tigers legend and has always been a great bloke. But his record this season is not good, but then if Tigers did decide to get a different head coach/DOR in they would be lambasted for being too footballey and not giving GM a proper chance.

In the position we are in Guy Noves would be a ideal coach to come in and rebuild from the bottom up and the board must be thinking about coaches of his ilk, but we have to give whoever is in charge a proper chance to build a squad, long term, and I don't think GM has had a chance to do that yet. Yes he's had nearly a full season in charge but not with his squad.

...one big stick that rugby supporters have but keep well hidden in the outhouse is the ability to demonstrate at their ground and show the clubs owners or board their disapproval of the mess they are perpetuating at their club.
The view that the game is a gentlemens' pursuit and not to be compared to the round ball game just down the road. Showing your displeasure at a game with banners or chanting for the board to step down....it's not the done thing and would be seen as putting the club in a bad light.
The game is moving in the direction of Football in marketing, transfers and with the RFU seemingly following the yellow brick road to perceived wealth ...... we may not like it, but it is an inevitable outcome. This Board has got to go, no more appointments to be made with them in charge, it cant be allowed and should not be allowed, we can't let it happen!!!
We need a different approach to club management and accountability, a restructuring of the ownership and its administration to prevent a situation like the present to be repeated in years to come.

He's the French rugby version of Alex Ferguson and deserves all the respect in the world, however I'd suggest at this stage in his career he's not best placed to adapt to a new league and new ideas. We need a Ben Ryan type, a proper rugby nerd who goes everywhere with a laptop full of tracking data.

I tend to agree with you. I think such an appointment would be another gamble.

True! The title of this thread was written with “tongue in cheek”. Anyway, he probably doesn’t speak a word of English and would be looking to enjoy his million euros in some place other than Leicester!

Listening to several British players speaking about their time in France they describe a very disorganised mess. It sounds like there has been no evolution of coaching methods. S and C is done by the players not clubs, diet is not considered and strategy is none existent. I’ve heard countless stories of training running all day long and players just getting flogged.

None of those teams mentioned have won a Heineken cup and the last French side to have any success in Europe were Toulon who were essentially self coached by a group of international superstars, Wilkinson, Giteau, Botha, Hayman et. Al

I maintain that a French coach, despite Noves’ past success, is the last thing we need right now.
