Wayne to Ref.

Post by johnthegriff »

I see that Barnsey is in charge on Saturday. All we need, a Gloucestershire ref for a game against Gloucester. I remember a young Tom Varmdell chasing a kick into the try area at Kingsholme and touching down just before the dead ball line, Barnes did not allow the try and refused to even discuss it. For that match I was in a position to see the try was good. Still we have the TMO and better television now so after the game at least we will know if the officials got it right.

John, are you suggesting that Wayne is anything other than impartial? As for Tom Varndell who knows he may just be playing on Saturday!

And Mr Barnes is also a considerably more experienced and better official than he was back then.

In my opinion he is now in the position of being the best ref in the Premiership. I doubt he would have allowed the two clearly illegal tries that JP allowed at Bath; one following a clear knock on and the other a clear double move after the tackle was completed. It is no wonder that Murph had harsh words with the officials at the end of the game :smt009

I thought you didn't agree with criticising of refs John?

Barnes is by far the best ref in the northern hemisphere if not the world.
I have no problems with him reffing our game this weekend, totally fair and unbiased.

Barnes will at least get most of the decisions correct. Talks constantly to players and will at least involve TMO when clarity is needed.
So Mr's Cole and Genge please pin your ears back and listen to Sir. That should reduce penalty count.
I am looking forward to a response after Barff and at least get some bragging rights back in West country clashes. :smt023

I look forward to Barnsey refereeing the game as he really has improved over the years compared with others, Oh how I wish he would tutor Maxwell-Keys, Wigglesworth and especially Pearce in the laws and player management. I am pleased too that we have David Rose as TMO because when he refereed here many years ago he was fair, explained and had the potential of a great Referee but got tripped up in life and is now a well respected TMO often in the south west area.

there is a reason he isn't allowed to ref England games and that is also the reason why in most sports they don't let you ref the team from the City you live in/were born in

Best ref in the world by some margin. Delighted to have him for any match, whoever the opposition.

He has indeed improved over the years. JP on the other hand seems to be going the other way :smt009 Always said, ever trust a man not prepared to use his first name :smt003

TBF I would think he would be most likely to 'favour' Quins at any time as, I believe, he is/was involved in the club in some capacity?

Remember the game at the Stoop when we scored a try just before half time. Mr Barnes asked for the grounding to be checked, that was ok, then he went back a bit further to check for a forward pass that wasn't so he went back a few phases and asked if there had been a knock on. The Quinn's fans near me were laughing, saying "this is ridiculous its a try just award and get on with the game". They also said that Wayne Barnes lived down the road in Whitton and trained and socialised with the Harlequins players, at the time I did not believe them but later was informed there was truth in that statement.
For the record I believe Barnsey is our best referee, way ahead of the others, but I do question a system that allows a ref to officiate in matches involving a team where he could be said to have a connection. It is certain that on Saturday the ref will give more than one decision that we fans will disagree with, (we will probably be wrong) but the ref should not be in a situation where he could be suspected of bias. I must make it clear I think Sir will ref honestly just as he sees it as he always does, I think he is a better ref now than he was on those previous occasions I mentioned and is better at using the technology available these days. I look forward to message board comments after we have won on Saturday.

Agreed John-Paul Doyle uses his initials so players, officials & spectators do not confuse him with past Pope's and the Vatican! If anyone shakes hands with him then please count your fingers & rings afterwards. :smt002
