Post by RagingBull »

With the Academy league starting up thought it might be an idea to have a thread going.
First game on Saturday Away against Newcastle.

Prop: Rob Hardwick, Alex Maxwell, Jack Rowntree, James Whitecombe

Full Back: Oliver Smith, Freddie Steward,

Got U18 Internationals in
Maxwell (Scotland), Whitecombe (England), Martin (England), Costelow (WaleS)

Alex Shaw had this to say on his Leicester player to watch
Leicester Tigers – Freddie Steward

A personal favourite, here, who for some reason hasn’t had the England U18 acknowledgement that his talent and potential should demand. Steward ticks all the boxes you could want from an emerging full-back, with the size and speed to be a rangy cover guy, as well as the vertical ability to make contested balls his own. He uses that size and speed well to launch dangerous counter-attacks, has an underrated kicking game and is a more than able one-on-one tackler. As an U17 last season, the odd pass would go astray after making one of those counter-attacking breaks and it’s in that technical area and ability to maintain composure where he will surely improve this season.

In terms of what he could be at the next level with the right coaching, though, the sky is honestly the limit and the mark of that is that we’ve mentioned him here over second row George Martin. Martin is a fiercely physical player, who boasts impressive natural size, but also surprising technical refinement for someone who has been able to dominate physically at this level. The lock is worth keeping your eye on this season just as much as Steward, as is back row Lynx Nouwey, who was one of the standout players at the Wellington U16 Festival earlier this year. Between Martin and Nouwey, Leicester will again boast one of the most formidable packs at this level.

The whole article is worth a read.

Six members of last season's U18 League Grand Final winning side have been named in the matchday squad for their opening fixture of the 2018/19 campaign this Saturday (December 15) in Newcastle.

Freddie Steward, Ronnie Du Rant, Alex Maxwell, James Whitcombe and George Martin have all been included in the starting side for the season opener against the Falcons Academy at Kingston Park, with Wales U18 fly-half Sam Costelow among the replacements.

The team will be captained by open-side flanker Samuel Eveleigh in the first game of U18 Academy Leauge season, which last year's Leicester squad went through undefeated on their way to grand final glory over Gloucester at Allianz Park.

Supporters can get to know members of this season's Academy Squad in LTTV's exclusive series, Tigers Next Generation by clicking here or visit their Profiles Page online.

"There's quite a lot of young guys been added to the group, who have added a lot of energy and enthusiasm to what we do," said Junior Tigers Academy Manager Jamie Taylor.

"It was nice to win an academy league last season, but in no way is the main goal of ours.

"We're here to develop young players and the measure of success for us is how many are playing out on the Welford Road pitch in a couple of years time."

Tigers Academy (15-1): Freddie Steward, Leo Gilliland, Ronnie Du Rant, Matt Potts, Joe Browning, Harry Glynn, Jack Van Poortvliet, Alex Maxwell, Shaun Allsopp, James Whitcombe, Tom Manz, George Martin, Kit Smith, Samuel Eveleigh (c), Oliver Ashworth

Replacements (16-23): Archie Vanes, Bob Singer, Jack Rowntree, Will Backhouse, Emeka Ilione, Sam Edwards, Sam Costelow, Ben Dickinson

The match would've been recorded for analysis but doubt they will release it, most likely Highlights are the best bet.

Don't know their names but the lad (looks like Otoje) wearing T impressed as well as the lad wearing D. But more than these 2 the whole team impressed - their running lines, off loading, and support play was outstanding. Show this to the senior squad to learn from.

I watched the highlights versus Newcastle and thought they looked excellent.
Although the Tigers did look a lot bigger and stronger overall I guess you can only play what's put in front of you and my concern would be that it might not be challenging enough to develop in preparation for the step up into mens rugby, which is a very big one at this level!
