How long are we supposed to put up with our diabolical lineout?

Post by Darc Tiger »

I can't remember the last time we had a solid, functioning lineout unit. No matter the hooker, no matter the jumping unit.

What has the club done to rectify this? I'm on the outside, but I can't point to anything.

Boris has done wonders with our scrum. Surely we can find a specialist to tidy up our lineout?

I absolutely fed up with our lineout being an embarrassment. Its unacceptable, and its cost us an unthinkable amount of points.

Something has to change.

The coaches will not be changed and neither will the players so just get used to it for yet another season!

We don't need to change the coaches, but surely we can find an addition. Even if its on a consulting/temporary basis who will focus on the lineout, like Boris does for our scrum.

Worked in the first half, fell apart in the second.

Geordan has got a lot to fix if you're expecting a short term magic fix and return to 2001 then you're going to be disappointed. This is going to take time. MOC has left a complete mess for him to sort out.

I'd be more sympathetic if it hadn't been an area of weakness for what feels like years now. Perhaps our greatest weakness of recent times.

I'd say it's been going on for about 7 years now. It's been costing us games as we are unable to score from 5m line out.
Cost us today at least twice, sadly its the Tigers way!

How can a club with our stature and resources not have addressed this by this point.

I'm not expecting a quick fix, but I'd like to think years of malaise would have prompted something to change. But nothing does, no matter who is in charge, or who is on the pitch. Nobody even seems to talk about it as a problem with any seriousness.

I'm fed up with it costing us games.

So am I. But I have now accepted it and try to stop blowing a gasket everytime it occurs. I'm now trying to become calmer during games but as I love this club its hard.

For the previous 6 or more seasons we have been slipping further behind in both tactics and quality. I now see a glimmer at the end of that long tunnel, realistically it is going to take time, for me as long as there are improvements in style, tactics and quality, even if they are small ones, then it's a step in the right direction.
I would sooner give Smurph a couple of seasons than the previous incumbent a couple of games!

Lineout problem solved by Spencer and Kitchener, the sooner they return the better!

So why don’t the team (and coaches) accept it’s such an obvious weakness (which it quite clearly is) and absolutely forget kicking to the corner because it’s a waste of time (particularly when you combine line out weakness with our mauling weakness) and capitalise on scrum strength (when we have it) or take 3 points. We could be better with what we have - that’s the secret sauce with teams and management - make the best of what you’ve got

Sadly I feel it’s everyone around the head coach and his team that’s the problem, the board and the players have to start taking responsibility and not just a paycheque

The first job of the coaches is to identify where the weakness is, it sounds obvious but I cannot tell if it is the call, the throw, the timing of the jump, the protection of the jumpers or the lifters but they need identify why we are weak.

Tom Young’s may be the problem if so drop him, if not keep him as starter but do not let him be made a fool of by others failing at this crucial part of the game.

If we cannot do analysis on our own lineout what hope of finding weaknesses in the opposition?

Then they need a call that the opposition cannot hope to win, be it front jumper ball, it does not matter as long as we retain possession, defend the possession, then plan an attack of that possession at least we have attacking ball, predictable does not mean bad if you do it well.

Well we did well to reach the final in 2011 and 2012 and extremely well to win the final in 2013 then!
