Well eyes down here we go. Hope MT is not jet lagged.

Not expecting a win but it will still be a good pointer as to whether there has been any improvement or whether it's going to be a re-run of last season or an also ran year.

Someone please remind me - what's happened to Genge and what do we know about these two new props on the bench (been out of the loop over the summer)?

Looking down the team lists I wouldn't swap many of our players for theirs. In my eyes a combined team would be dominated by Tigers. If only we could learn how to effectively translate the quality of our individuals into a team performance.

Genge injured knee training with England. Had operation and was due back new year but now could be back as early as November.

It's all about coaching Will S. Dominating the XV or not I fully expect us to be dominated tomorrow.

genge did his knee training with England, muted for a December come back (may be earlier). Two new props are supposed to be pretty good, but time will tell..
cheers

My main concern is ball retention. I expect a titanic back row battle with yellow cards flying as Wayne may set a marker for playing to the Laws - which should mean Chiefs restricted.

We have fielded a strong team, how much do we want it? should be a really good game, few fireworks I think.

Yes they are almost playing three 7's and have a lot of speed in that department. Only BOC in our pack would have similar speed.

If we can hold onto the ball and create some genuine front foot ball, we have the backs to win the game.

Over to the Pack!!

Second row and second replacements are quite weak from Exeter, front row replacements will still be a handful.

As for Exeter naming three 7s, it’s two 6s that can cover 7 and a 7. Kalamafoni, Cole and O’Connor should be able to match that at the breakdown.

Really? I think the Tigers will give as good as they get and the win for either side will only be by a few points. The Tigers can win this if their game plan is right and coordinated.

I disagree about Exeter playing three 7's, only Kvesic is a genuine 7 in O'Connor type. Simmons has the pace to play that role, but utilises it more for attacking wide channels rather than getting at the breakdown. Likewise, although Armand often wears/wore 7 last year, he's no more an openside than Robshaw and Haskell, workrate yes, but not a breakdown specialist.
I like the look of our team, talent in abundance, man for man I'd largely choose our players, but a quality team is greater than the sum of its parts, and ultimately it comes down to whether our coaches can get them cohesively playing a smart and dynamic type of rugby as a unit, which Baxter and his staff undoubtably do with Exeter.

It comes down to two things for me, discipline and physicality (particularly at the breakdown).

Discipline because the Chiefs are a team that specialise in grinding teams down and forcing errors rather than carving teams wide open on a regular basis. If we deny them field position, it will take away plan A.

Hopefully the likes of Denton and Spencer will also help us at least match them physically, particularly in defence. I saw a stat yesterday that shows O’Connor is the best turnover specialist in the league. If we dominate collisions with him nearby, he gets a nice big ‘gate’ through which to attack the ball and we can disrupt their patterns.

Woke up feeling more optimistic than I did yesterday!

If last nights match showed one thing these first couple of weeks will be down to hits the ground running which comes down to the pre season.

I just have a weird feeling that team could surprise a few today

I agree with you on all points iceman. I would add that we need to get our kicking and chasing game spot on so we can play the game in or around their 22m line. What gives me optimisim is that when we played them at Welford Road last season, with what I would argue is a "weaker" team than that we have today, we managed to squeeze them just as you outline above. Given the strength of our team now, I believe we have the players to replicate that. If we can and then add in making the best of our backline when we get quick or turnover ball we will have a very good chance of winning.

Our bench is also very strong. Wells, Williams and TPN can certainly inject physical impact and Harrison, Eastmond and Olowofela can bring a cutting edge. I believe we have the players to win this as long as they can, in the oft used coaching phrase, "execute". Come on you Tigers!! :smt038 :smt038 :smt038
