Wayne Baynes to soon call time on his refereeing career

Post by JP14 »

Sad news, looks as this will be his last Premiership season and his final hurrah will be in the World Cup.

Massive shame he is retiring at such an early age, he is a great referee up there with Nigel Owens as the two best refs in the world, his error count in matches is very low and I always enjoy watching matches he refs.
Rugby is probably the hardest game in the world to referee and along with the other refs in the premiership they make it look easy in most cases, players have a bad game and very rarely get slated but if a ref has a poor game supporters are very quick to criticise him, I think supporters who criticise refs should take a referees course and learn the laws of the game as most supporters around me who moan about decisions have no idea what they are talking about. I have great respect for anyone who referees games at whatever level as without them we would have no game.

By far the best ref as stated - looks like it is for family reasons which you can't fault

A real shame, I don't think Nigel Owens will be long behind him and then the game will have lost 2 of the best

A real shame, but understandable.
I think it’s a real worry as to the standard of refs active now & those coming through

Paying them a decent wage would be a good start. The ref's all have to hold down other jobs to keep themselves in the black. Insane as they form such a fundimental part of the sport.

What do you think is a decent wage for a referee?

I believe that the full time refs are on that salary or more.....part timers are paid a good match fee plus expenses

How much do you think (or by the sounds of it, you know) they are paid then?

There are only a number of refereees and assistants who are employed full time by the RFU and the others are part time....the part time ones are the ones that have other jobs to support them.

it wil be a huge loos to the sport. He's probably the best out there atm, has a good repor with the players and it pretty consistent. When on Rugby tonight is always clear and eloquent.

The up coping refs have a big pair of boots to fill..

For how fundamental they are to the game I'd put those at the top of their game on 6 figures as a measure to keep them interested. There have been a few interviews with Sirs Barnes and Owens who both state that they do it for the love of the game and it is not something to be relied upon as a sole source of income. WB's interview was on the BBC podcast last season with Ugo Monye.
