Maybe he was a “just in case” - just in case any other centres managed to get injured in preseason (or, more likely, whilst on international duty?).

Rugby Pass has done an analysis of Premiership Clubs' use of Academies for producing home-grown talent.

"Leicester Tigers

Academy graduates in the Premiership: 42 (2nd)

Percentage of squad homegrown: 49.1% (4th)

Leicester have become maybe the greatest exporter of talent in the Premiership over the last five or so years, with a number of players going on to play key roles for other clubs in the competition. The likes of Billy Twelvetrees, Henry Purdy, Calum Green, Alex Lewington and Perry Humphreys are chief among them.

Reigning U18 champions, Leicester promoted conservatively this summer, but a larger intake could well be coming next year, with a number of the side’s key contributors last season still U17s at the time."

Wasn't there a comment from O'Connor recently about wanting an extra back row (believed to be Mercer) but also an extra winger or fullback? Maybe they've decided against Macken based on that need.
Centres - Toomua, Tuilagi, Owen, Eastmond, Smith, Tait, Worth, Hardwick, Olowofela, Thacker - we're pretty well covered with 10 players for two starting berths, albeit some of them are likely to play elsewhere also.
Back 3 - May, Thompstone, Holmes, Aspland-Robinson, Olowofela, Veainu, Tait, Worth. Eight players for three starting spots looks less well stocked than midfield.
Perhaps there's another option out there we are looking at who can cover wing and fullback, instead of allocating remaining salary cap to more centres.

Well I suppose the Not-Nots have to have a few Irish players in the team to compliment the Scots, English, Australian, South Seas, South Africans,Canadian, USA etc in the team. Trade description?
A great result for Tigers last Friday against the United Nations! :smt003
