Anglo no more Welsh Cup

Post by ellis9 »

The headline story in The Rugby Paper tomorrow is that the Welsh teams are pulling out of the Anglo Welsh Cup so Premiership club owners will discuss a new internal competition.

Why? Squash it all together and raise the quality of the A league.

Simple - just include the top 4 clubs from the Championship, which will also help develop that league by the extra TV exposure and revenue.
Nowadays referees decide matches, players by how much.

Simple - Relaunch the Pilkington Cup. It would be great for rugby to have an FA Cup-style cup competition in the modern game. Thoughts?

Thank you Tigerbeat, does anyone know why the RFU changed the Pilkington Cup in the 1st place?

Hopefully if any new competition has groups it will get rid of the ridiculous format where you don’t play teams in your group.

We should just mimic the Welsh and have an U23 tournament. An idea of a FA cup style tournament is very romantic but what will our younger players get out of that? Strengthen the A league or implement an U23 tournament with say 2 over age players allowed in each XV to accommodate returning injured or out of form players.

I'd have a knock out competition with Premiership and Championship teams in.

I'm not sure that a semi-pro team getting humiliated by a Premiership outfit is in anyone's interests. Top 4 from Championship would work though, as would improving the A League.

I agree with GK. If you have a knockout cup like the FA cup then young players won't have as much match time as most teams will play either 1 or 2 matches. The group stages guarantee 4 matches in the current format. Include London Irish, Ealing, Bedford and Cornish Pirates.

An U23 league with 4 Championship teams that doesn’t allow Premiership teams to play no more than two seniors to allow game time from return from injury/suspension will be good I think to replace both the AWC and the A League

Snap JP ;) in fact forget a league,4 groups of four who play each other home and away (in their own group!) winners into SF. AWC without the stupid group stages.

Might have something to do with the extra fixtures in PRO 14 due to 2 more SA sides joining it next year and more to follow the following year.
