If they hadn't left?

Post by mightymouse »

If they hand left we could have had.

1. Balmain
2. Keyser
3. Brookes
4. Slater
5. Parling
6. Gibson
7. Salvi
8. Waldron

9. Steel
10. Ford
11. Goneva
12. Twelvetrees
13. Mermoz
14. Lewington
15. Tonks

Replacements from:
De chaves
Ryder
Green
Burns
Odogwu
Fonua
Flood
Bell
Williams
Young
Pearce

Ok ok it's a silly game but I had a spare half hour so indulge me if you will.

Could this team cut it in the premiership?

If no (which I suspect may be the answer from most of you) who would you want back now?

I've put Ford in the team because he did leave but has now come back... so let's say he is the first of the fans returnees .. except he is a reality.

Interesting exercise in terms of looking at positions .. looks like we don't get rid of may front row players too often .. but a few locks and midfield. Does that say something about us as a club or but playing style etc.?

Have I forgotten anyone significant? I think I have most of the premiership players and one playing in pro 12 .. haven't really though about others that may have gone to France or back to SH. Please feel free to add to the list or put what you think is the best team out of this lot.

I'd take 4-8 back in a heartbeat, considering our recent performances. Callum Green too.

Tommy Bell would be particularly useful right now as a solid, kicking full back. Kayser was always a top class hooker, and Mermoz or Twelvetrees would be useful to cover injury.

1. Balmain -many chances but just not top level. we have at least 3 better TH's than him. Glaws offered more money.
2. Keyser -we were never going to hold onto him for long
3. Brookes - Genge has had him on toast on two occasions now. Again, we have better.
4. Slater- would love to still have him
5. Parling -needs to come back one day in a coaching role
6. Gibson -would make our matchday 23
7. Salvi - As above
8. Waldron -overated IMO. Wouldn't fix any of our problems.

9. Steel -not really needed
10. Ford -should never have let him go as well as Flood
11. Goneva - right time to let him go
12. Twelvetrees -probably would be involved if he were here now
13. Mermoz - expensive, nahhh
14. Lewington -should still be here.
15. Tonks -we have better

Replacements from:
De chaves -unsure
Ryder- no
Green- unsure who this is
Burns -obviously having Williams and burns is better than ford and ford but having Ford with Toomua and Joe ford behind with Hardwick coming through isn't bad.
Odogwu- no thanks
Fonua -liability
Flood- Got his number?
Bell -would slot straight in at 15
Williams- see Burns post
Young- no
Pearce -no

Callum Green. NEWCASTLE falcons.lock forward

A no nonsense tough nut, old fashioned style lock... nothing flashy but actually I think we could do with someone like him in our squad. In the mould of Louis Deacon ... but not as good.

Waldrom? over-rated? Last years' top try scorer in the AP?

Yes, most of his tries come from rolling mauls and we all know we cant do that. The rest come from a couple metres out and we are often not close enough to the line for someone like him to be as effective!

It funny myself and a friend where talking about this not long ago after the may signing how many rapid wingers we'd let go from the academy because they didn't fit the tuilagi mound, now we've bought may obviously better than anyone we let go but I hadn't realised how many forward there where even international props if you include Brooke's who I know got done over by genre. Who is it at tigers who can't see what so many other premiership clubs can. I mean you've also got Purdy and umanga on top of those. Grated no number 8's maybe we just don't make them anymore.

My youngest bro is a Chiefs STH and doesn't rate Waldrom as other than a poacher, set up by the other backrowers. He was close to being let go until he responded to a disciplinary.
I can't get the idolisation of those who largely have proven flawed, including several current players.
The truth is we haven't had the luck, the expenditure nor effective BoD for about 4 years. Somewhere a brick has popped out of the wall, and we have done a Loffreda repeat with AM after removing a key figure, then panicked and re-hired a good but nowhere near top coach.
The only one I'd have back is Tommy Bell.
Leicester Tigers 1995-
Nottingham 1995-2000
Swansea (Whites) 1988-95
A game played on grass in the open air by teams of XV.

Sorry to go off topic all!
Has your bro said much about Sam Simmonds jgriffin?
Perhaps a player we should make them pay big for in the future if they want to keep him!

Kayseri was only good enough for France. Never going to prevent the emerging sons of former Tigers players. Sadly no one accepted that at less than 5'8" the reality is that scrum half is the only real position at the top level. Heaven forbid hooker.

On those mentioned above; I'd want Lewington (should never have been let go), Gibson (although I won't forgive him for leaving to Saints to "further his England career"), Parling (right time to go, but we desperately need him back), Kayser (quality hooker) and Burns/Williams (losing both was criminal last season).

At least we can say, our two shallowest positions (Outside Centre and No. 8) would not be any better off even with the returning players. I know TTTE was the top try scorer but he is excellent in being in the right place off mauls and rucks, not great in doing the hard work.

15. Telusa Veainu
14. Alex Lewington
13. Manu Tuilagi
12. Matt Toomua
11. Jonny May
10. George Ford
