Leicester children's heart surgery threat

Post by Weaves14 » Fri Nov 18, 2016 6:32 pm

Hi, I'm hoping fellow Leicester fans can help. You may have read in the papers or seen on TV that NHS England is planning to close the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester. This unit saved hundreds of lives every year yet is being threatened simply because it does 30 fewer operations a year than NHS England is demanding. My own son was treated there when he was diagnosed with a life threatening heart problem at one day old last year. I'm sure many other Leicester supporters have their own stories of Glenfield.

Closure would leave the East Midlands as the only region in the country without a children's heart centre. Children would have to travel to Birmingham, Leeds or London. Intensive care services would be at risk. Leicester and the East Midlands deserves better.

Please take a moment to head to https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/160455. With offline signatures we're approaching the point where Parliament will have to consider a debate.

Thank you!

I was always taught that if a thing works then there's no need to change it. Leicester & Glenfield Heart Surgery team have been among the leading experts in Heart Surgery whether child or adult since I can ever remember and at almost 70 years old that goes back a long way, If they try and tinker with it or change it or worse still close it down, then that should be deemed a criminal act and I really don't know or care which act of Law is used to punish these people. It seems that with every NHS review some bright spark sticks his or her oar in hoping to come up with some money saving scheme which has nothing to do with patient care and is solely designed to make themselves look good when in fact it does the opposite and causes untold stress on patients their families and the people who work on the front line at these amazing places. So why don't they just belt up and stop wasting everyone's time and effort with their ill thought out schemes and then they can slink off into the night and disappear up their own backsides.

Thanks to everyone who has signed so far. Congenital Heart Disease can strike anyone, and one in every 133 babies are born with it in one form or another. Often it is undiagnosed until birth and having a specialist centre within a reasonable distance is vital. If Leicester closes our children will have to go to Birmingham, Leeds or London. This will cost lives.
