8th minute Sunday v Racing song

Post by JackFlashJonny »

Rugby is a great game played by herculean men such as the late great Anthony Foley

Come the Racing match this weekend we should show our love and affinity with Munster by singing The Fields of Athenry on the 8th minute as a mark of respect for Foley...

Lets use the power of social media and spread the word it would be a lovely gesture I am sure all at Munster would truly appreciate..would be nice to sing a good song for once too

Please comment below if you are with me :smt023

If you don't know it you aren't a true rugby fan so google it :smt003

That'd be a great idea - particularly if it was heard across all the grounds this weekend. I won't be at WR, so can't join in unfotunately.

Count me in. I think it is a great idea.

You need to go big on FB and Twitter to make this work.

A fantastic and fitting tribute, get in touch with Gary Sherrard:-

He's head of communications and sometimes does the pitch announcing, I am sure this is something the club would support and promote pre-match.

By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young girl calling
Michael they have taken you away,
For you stole Trevelyan's corn
So the young might see the morn,
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay

CHORUS
Low lie, The Fields of Athenry
where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
we had dreams and songs to sing,
It's so lonely round the Fields of Athenry

By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
'Nothing matters Mary, when you're free'
Against the famine and the crown,
I rebelled, they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity

CHORUS

By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star falling
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived in hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely round the Fields Of Athenry

CHORUS

No use trying to do the whole song - just the chorus - probably x 2 would help get everyone join in. Brilliant idea

Have emailed Gary to request that the words to the chorus are scrolled along the bottom of the big screen if possible.

For clarification in case it goes ahead, will it be done in the 8th minute or when the clock shows 8?

Generous sentiment, I fear that unless the tune of this song is familiar to the majority of supporters it will not be possible to do it justice, acapella Munster style, even with the words.
Without hope we are nothing, keep the faith, a Tiger for eternity

When the match clock shows the 8th minute imo..I doubt the club will get behind this too much as the match will be in play

Therefore it is down to us to make it happen..

You'll need to stick this on as many forums as possible, will need a huge social media presence to do it justice. Sky Sports would probably jump on it being a good thing as well if it was done at multiple grounds.

It's a lovely sentiment and a lovely idea, but just being pragmatic I don't think enough people will have heard about this and/or know the song and/or feel inclined to drop everything to sing during the match and/or remember to do so.

Might I suggest that the right time to do this would be immediately after the referee's whistle to end the silence before the game (that I assume will happen.) If something will catch on, it will do so then.

And also, keep it simple if you want people to join in - just sing the chorus repetitively until it fades.
