Job Marler racially abusing a Welsh player? No Sanction

Re: Job Marler racially abusing a Welsh player?
A few thoughts:
If the refs mic had not picked it up I expect we wouldn't have heard about it? That is no excuse of course.
If the ref hears something of this nature - would he or should send the player off? Could he refer it to the TMO.
Has Thomas said anything about it?
Seems similar to Jamie Vardy calling a bloke a Jap in the casino.

Not smart and not acceptable these days. No doubt ill judged in the heat of the contest. I am sure far more offensive exchanges were made between the players during the game.
Will get a ban but hardly the crime of the century.

Well from what I understand and indeed have actually seen both Joe Marlers alleged misdemeanours were shown in selected match video footage in tweets by welsh supporters. It begs the question as to why anyone would troll through 80 mins of video footage and tweet it in order to ensure that it will result in a possible citing?
Without hope we are nothing, keep the faith, a Tiger for eternity

I was waiting with baited excitement for a post from Welshy08 and he hasn't let me down. Deducted points and handed to Wales.. .. Thanks for making the result so much more enjoyable with your hatered of anything English.
Marler is going to get a ban and that should be the end of it. What he said wasn't acceptable and he knows that. He deserves a ban, but then Francis is going to get a bigger one I feel.

There is never any points for 2nd place...

I know I'm not the recipient so perhaps I can't really judge or appreciate the hurt and pain suffered by Samson Lee but am I alone in thinking that this is trivial beyond belief? Or should we all be putting in complaints when ZSF calls us rostbifs? Surely Marler's phrase was less insulting than calling someone a big fat gypsy which is apparently all right when it is done by a national television programme?
I am neither clever enough to understand nor stupid enough to play this game

Marler used someone's ethnic origin as an insult. That's not acceptable whichever way you wish to dress it up. It's no more acceptable than using "black boy", "Jew boy" or any other ethnic origin as an insult.tigercaspian wrote:+1h's dad wrote:I know I'm not the recipient so perhaps I can't really judge or appreciate the hurt and pain suffered by Samson Lee but am I alone in thinking that this is trivial beyond belief? It seems that some seem to think that gypsies are fair game for some reason and more acceptable to abuse than other races. Not sure why. Marler was clearly one of them, and has learned a difficult lesson about his ignorance.

No my friend, you're not!h's dad wrote:...... am I alone in thinking that this is trivial beyond belief?.
"Insults" are two a penny in competitive sport - from International games to the 4th XV on the local park. Of course, there have to be limits, clolour/racism etc, but was the limit crossed here? In my opinion, no. As I wrote earlier, Marler has no doubt been called a fat English "tee double u a tee" many times before - and probably worse, and just because this instance was heard on the ref's microphone, loads of politically correct do-gooders are jumping on the bandwagon.

Are Gysies defined as a race.
Yes.
Did Marler used racist language.
Yes.
"Whataboutery" and "Obfuscation" is one thing, but it is cut and dried.
Now..with the very recent and homophobic and racial abuse of Nigel Owens, at Twickenham still fresh in the mind.. and now this deplorable abuse of the travelling Gypsy community, you seriously have to wonder what exactly is English Rugby all about?
What sort of people play English rugby and what sorts of people support the game? Is turning up to watch and support England now akin to a Donald Trump Rally?
The only way to stop this is to punish the English whenever their uncontrolled racism raises it's ugly head. If that means kicking them out of the Six Nations for a year or docking them points..so be it.
You have to nip this behaviour in the bud early.

You're absolutely right in my view. The post goes remarkably downhill from this point, however.

Re: Job Marler racially abusing a Welsh player?
I am not condoning Marler's actions for one second but the straws some people will desperately clutch at are laughable.
As a matter of interest, if the only words used were 'Gypsy boy' then where is the racism if Samson Lee does in fact have gypsy roots? It is a statement of fact, isn't it? Perhaps Marler should be done for ageism for referring to a grown man as a boy.
Would there have been as much resentment from the English sector if Lee had called Marler 'English boy'? I don't think so. Then again, we don't get that mardy when we lose.

No, come on, you and I both know that the use of his ethnic origin is used as a derogatory term in this case.Donny wrote:I am not condoning Marler's actions for one second but the straws some people will desperately clutch at are laughable.

If you're condoning this then you'd have to conclude you condone apartheid era South Africa and the derogatory use of "black boy". I mean... they were black I suppose so it was a statement of fact.
Re: Job Marler racially abusing a Welsh player?
Playing devils advocate here - will they be able to prove he used the words in an abusive way?
"Boy" in itself isn't an insult merely a suggestion the player wasn't man enough for the job, a regulation wind up. The term defining his race or ethnicity isn't in itself an insult or perjorative unlike the terms used by Top Gear.
Should they ban him I suspect a smart a**d lawyer will try and tie them in knots! I suspect he'll get a reprimand for this and the ban for the forearm to the face!
