England: the Journey continues!
All the same old faults in the first half, no creation in the midfield, poor control at the breakdown.

Re: England: the Journey continues!
Agree, limited midfield today, Slade and Manu will change that.
England defence looked good or were Scotland not so good in attack?
Scotland can't scrummage for toffee!

The same old problem
No cohesion at halfback, a jack of all trades at 12 who shouldnt be there, but is, because of his goal kicking
When will Jones pick this team??
Brown/ Haley
Watson/ Wade
Daly/ Joseph
Slade/ Tuilagi
Nowell/ May
Cipriani/ Ford
Youngs/ Care
Cole/ Brookes
George/ Youngs
Vunipola/ Hill
Slater Captain/ Kruis
Lauchberry/ Lawes
Itoje/ ?
Hughes/ Vunipola
Armitage/ Kvesic

Re: England: the Journey continues!
FWIW I did not see any change from the Lancaster era except better setpiece, but then Scotland weren't that good IMO.
Both Vunipolas acquitted themselves well.
Midfield creativity was zero.
Jack Nowell was good.
Penalty count too high.
Breakdown work was poor.
Handling was as poor as usual in the first 6N game.
Ford was pants.
It was very fortunate that Scotland were poor.
My verdict: England will be hard to beat, but when they go, they'll implode.
Needed - a good 7, a good 10, good 12, better 15.

Billy V deserved mom Cole best game in an England shirt for a couple of years. Yby buzzed nicely when he came on.
Pleasantly surprised by Kruis, Launchbury unfit, Itoje has to come in.
Haskell did nothing but tackle and until a proper 7 is either picked or manufactured there won't be any great improvement.

Re: England: the Journey continues!
Wasn't Dan Cole the best 7 on the pitch?
The scrum looked better after George came on.

Was there a scrum after George came on? He was on for the last 3 minutes.mol2 wrote:Wasn't Dan Cole the best 7 on the pitch?

Re: England: the Journey continues!
A decent enough performance, but nothing to suggest this is a brave new world full of opportunities.
Still seem to fade in and out of games. Breakdown was sloppy. Almost no carrying options outside of Big Billy. 10-12 too stodgy to do much with the ball. Required a nice option from Mako to create England's only real piece of attacking quality.
Hartley getting too much praise for not losing his rag. Set piece was good enough, but he provided nothing outside of that. No carries, not many tackles, didn't smash the rucks. He's bang average. England would be improved with George at hooker.
In fact, England looked desperate for a bit of youthful exuberance from the likes of George, Itoje, Clifford, Kvesic and Daly.

Re: England: the Journey continues!
Hartley OK and kept his head on. The Ref is a poor one so he did well to not upset him.
Thought that Ford made so many mistakes and indecisions that Farrell saved him and the team again and again.
Care was very ordinary and Ben looked much classier and more urgent when he came on.
Brown made some weird kicks and runs, Watson seemed slow, Nowell could join the back row as a floater as he can play there too. Ford's poor play meant there were few opps for the backs as he kept giving the ball away.
Dan Cole had a decent game and Billy V was the star player imho.

Re: England: the Journey continues!
Really impressed with Jack Nowell. He wants to get involved in everything, rucks, lineouts scrums...and his attitude is top notch.
If his attitude could rub off on the rest of the team England would do brilliantly.
Love that type of player.
But England looked poor today. Wales would have put 25 points on both teams.

Re: England: the Journey continues!
It is clear Ford is completely out of form, stick Farrell at 10, Marler is a massive weak link in the front row, start with Vunipola, Haskell is not a 7 and not the future, give Kvesic a run. Kruis is a solid lock and I would like to see Slater alongside him when fully fit. Lawes is out of form and Lauchbury is not fit. You have to hope Jones starts to pick on form and not just on name. A fully functioning scots team would have turned us over yesterday, Italy next week could be interesting after their performance in Paris.

Re: England: the Journey continues!
It was a good solid win and frankly I wasn't expecting much more for an away match in Scotland against a half decent highly motivated team, and with a conservative selection.
I agree that Haskell is not a 7, frankly Robshaw is better. Kevesic worries me because seemingly he can't get a regular start for Glaws, was on the bench on Friday for the second week running. If he was the standout 7 in England surely he should be the first name on the team sheet.
I'd rather give Clifford a go at 7 v Italy, replace Launchbury with Itoje (Sarries engine room), Maku for Marler, Youngs for Care and Daly for Joseph, plus I would drop Ford who is way out of form, put Farrell at 10 (who is in good form), just not sure who would play at 12...Hill, Devoto? Such a shame Slade got injured.

Re: England: the Journey continues!
I think Glos are giving their internationals some time off. Like Laidlaw being on the bench against us when he is clearly their best 9.
Kvesic is undoubtedly their best 7, and arguably the best 7 in the league.

Re: England: the Journey continues!
A good recovery from the RWC. Hugely improved scrum, particularly the striking of the ball back to BV, and improved line out and driving maul. Breakdown still has much room to improve. Good to see Dan putting in his best international performance since his injury.
Lovely play by Mako and Farrell to create the second try.
Ford is badly out for form. But i would suggest anybody who thinks Cipriani should replace him was not at Welford Road yesterday.
