You could probably even make a quality third XV, especially as I still haven't included the likes of Sam Harrison, Opeti Fonua, Lekusa Veainu etc.

Re: Strength in depth
This really is the most excited I have been about a season for years..
Great squad, as you say great strength in depth and a kiwi complementing Cockers at the helm...
If only the did they away shirt in classic I would completely satisfied all round

This does put things in some form of order, if we can get these guys on the pitch I for one will be very excited. Bring on Sunday, bring on the season, watch out.......here we go again !Iain wrote:15. Mat Tait

Re: Strength in depth
When you look at that squad it really seems we have used the new extra money wisely investing in a very good squad of 30+ players of real quality...

Re: Strength in depth
With this sort of depth, is it time to do some serious squad rotation in the manner of Pat Howard? I know about playing settled combinations and the disruption in consistency that injuries have caused us in the past, but he tried it, and we were one game off the perfect season. Perhaps rotating pods of players, centre or half back combinations for example, to suit the opposition. Keep the guys fit and keen. Players don't need to play all the games in a season - far from it.
In my defence, I was left unsupervised….

Re: Strength in depth
This would depend on the success Mauger has in cohering the squad, getting them to 'buy into a particular coaching style/philosophy' (where's the vomit smiley when you need it?!). I have no doubt that this will happen. It remains to be seen exactly when, of course, but the squad is cause for optimism.loretta wrote:With this sort of depth, is it time to do some serious squad rotation in the manner of Pat Howard? Re: Strength in depth
Rotation needn't be for resting your "best" players as I'm not sure there is necessarily a best XV anyway. Play horses for courses.
For example at fly half, Williams would play if the game was played in testing conditions where there is a need to play territory and peg the opposition back, whereas Burns is best in games against sides where games become a little more broken and he can find space to run through.
You might choose better defensive wingers where the pitch is heavier, such as Smith or Thompstone, whereas on harder tracks Goneva or Camacho would be a good shout.

Re: Strength in depth
i think it said on RL last night there are 28 games on the trot?
we will need some sort of coherent rotation system if we're going to get through the season. It will be v. interesting to see how some of the other 'top' teams with smaller squads go,

Especially since many recruits are coming from SH, therefore not accustomed to such an attritional season.
With a smaller squad, it could well be a case of live fast, die young.

Die young? What's the Wasps head coach got to do with it?loretta wrote:Especially since many recruits are coming from SH, therefore not accustomed to such an attritional season.

Re: Strength in depth
I'm going to upset a few and say that there are a large amount of foriegn players.
I also don't like this idea of players being English qualified under residency rules as it's ripping the heart out of English rugby.
See what it means to other nationalities to represent their nation, tears in their eyes come anthem time and so on.
I was told by a mate that as a Tigers fan I had no right to comment on England, looking at that squad it's becoming more difficult to argue too much with that.
It's foriegn dominated and the English quality is getting lesser and older.
I don't mind high quality of JDV's type and there are a couple of others not seen yet that I think will be great signings, but it's a sorry state for English rugby when one of it's premier clubs is so reliant on imports.
Not that it's not a good looking squad though, it clearly is.
I don't rate most of the younger players at all so I fully understand why this has been required and I'm not blaming coaches as it's their job to put the best squad together they possibly can, they seem to have done a good job on paper.
I can't say that I am as emotionally attached to Tigers as an Englishman as I once was though, likewise with England containing so few Tigers.
