Interesting Tom Youngs rumour

Post by MrPartridge »

Speaking to a few well informed rugby friends at the weekend with quite a good insight from their position working in and around AP and Championship clubs.

The collective view was that it is rumoured in rugby circles that Tom Youngs scrummaging is brittle and that props from opposing teams are targeting him as it is known he struggles to keep binding with his props when under pressure.

Anyone else heard anything more on this? Could just be tittle-tattle I guess...

Yeah, our scrum has been marching backwards when he is in it... Tom has answered every critic regarding how he will deal with the setpiece this year with standout performances on the pitch.

Can't say I've seen much evidence of that when he was marching Saints backwards a couple of weeks ago, or holding Toulouse at our place last season. Seems fairly nailed-on at England 2 as well if he is flaky.

Wasn't 'popper' Hartley that started this rumour by any chance was it?
Nowadays referees decide matches, players by how much.

He certainly does not like TY as expressed verbally at last May's final and he certainly hates being England's second choice hooker.

maybe he should of stayed South African then ...

TY was also first choice for the Lions during the summer, if his scrummaging was so weak he wouldn't be getting all this International recognition

Pains me to say your going to hate me but Richard Hibbard played all the Lions tests as first choice hooker :smt023

not really, Youngs still played every test, if his scrummaging was ads bad as suggested he wouldn't have made the squad

also, Rugby much like Football is very much a squad game, so to me, if you are in the match squad and play in each of hte Tests, you are first choice anyway, regardless of who actually starts the games as players, in the front row especially rarely complete the full 80 mins at that level

When he first got into the England side perhaps this was the case. But I think that was more a reflection of the loose heads beside him. Cole on the tight head is rock solid.

However this seems to have been sorted and it would seem he only pops up when refs allow the props to drive in and up.
The new engagement rules should well suit him - as they seem to be suiting Tigers in general. Playing with quality loose heads does help - Ayerza and Mulipola don't leave him exposed in the way that Vunipola did in the 6N.
That's why Corbisiero is vital for England- his scrummaging is way better than Vunipola or Marler who were made monkeys of by Adam Jones in the 6N decider.

tbh so did I, Cole didn't start but I seemed to remember Youngs starting 2 and then getting replaced in the starting XV for the last
