Tigers contribution to england

Post by mightymouse »

I was musing in the shower the other day (maybe an image that the rest of you do not wish to conjure with!!)about which position Tigers had most contributed to over the years for England - not just in number but in quality

I had started this train of thought with the remarkable transformation of tom Youngs and his meteoric rise from 2nd team centre to Lions hooker. So it was hooker that I started with

Hooker: Wheeler, Cockerill, West, Chuter, Youngs
Props: Cowling, Redfern (just),Garforth, Rowntree, White, Cole
Lock: Johnson, Kay, Parling
No 8 : Richards, Crane,Waldroum
Flanker: Back, Moody, Croft
Scrum Half : Youngs, Healy, Ellis, Youngs
Flyhalf: Cusworth, Goode, Flood
Centres: Dodge, Woodward, Greenwood,Tuilagi
Wingers: Underwoods x2
Fullback: Hare, Stimpson,

I am sure I have missed dozens out -(it was only a quick shower) and I'm sure many will add in plenty but to answer my own question as to which position has had the greatest contribution? - there are some excellent canditates and all up for consideration but I must go back to my original train of thought and just look at the excellence of tigers contribution at Hooker and think we have so much more to come from Tom youngs.

excellent additions - not sure how I missed Corry - Not sure if adding the same bloke into 3 different is quite the right thing but I get your drift that Corry and Healy have contribution to lots of positions on their own! It makes the doubly of tripley valuable!

AA has not been capped by England whilst at Tigers.

To date 83 (or 82 depending on where you look) England Internationals have been capped whilst at Leicester Tigers. I'd also question including Healey in so many positions as he never actually started a game for England at Centre, only once started at FH & once at FB. He was predominantly used on the wing by England.

By the way, 83 England internationals is not the most by one club. I believe Quins have supplied the most players to England to date.

Gustard toured with England but was never capped.
Erinle's caps came after he left Tigers.

So far you have managed to name every England player capped whilst at Tigers since 1964 (plus a few earlier than that) with the exception of TWO.

I have ordered them below by date of first England cap at Tigers (hence why Flood is so far down for example).

See if you can name the two that you have missed:

R E Rowell
A G B Old
P Wheeler
G Adey
R Cowling
D Hare
P Dodge
L Cusworth
C Woodward
N Youngs
R Underwood
S Redfern
D Richards
??????
T Underwood
M Johnson
N Back
G Rowntree
A Healey
D Garforth
R Cockerill
W Greenwood
D West
??????
M Corry
T Stimpson
L Lloyd
B Kay
L Moody
O Smith
J White
H Ellis
A Goode
T Varndell
L Deacon
G Chuter
D Hipkiss
T Croft
T Flood
J Crane
S Vesty
D Cole
B Youngs
M Tuilagi
G Parling
T Waldrom
T Youngs

Does Marcus Rose count or had he left Tigers by the time he was capped - don't think he came after Deano either - I suspect he was before

ok I couldn't stand the suspense so I have be forced into cheating and looking it up

Barry evans got 2 caps (winger in the 80s for those not old enough to remember)

And Stuart Potter capped once as a blood replacement on the Tour of Hell (one he would probably even rather forget)

whilst doing that reseach I saw that Scott Benton got a cap on the same tour - but not in Tigers colours at that time and the other one time Tiger I saw down that suprised me was Michael Horak but not a tiger at the time ( or indeed Ennglish !)
