Do Tigers need better goalkickers?
With the match against Saracens ending in defeat, due to a missed opportunities in goal kicking. I believe Tigers really need a better goal kicker in front of goal, as Billy Twelvetrees had one opportunity to win it for us, however he wasn't successful. Tigers really need to sign a top quality goal kicker, who can kick goals under pressure. If we had the chance to sign Dave Walder, from wasps, that would of been a great signing. With the 6 nations happening every year, a lot of our top quality players are on England duty. Toby Flood is a great kicker in front of goal, but he is certainly England's number 10, so this means Tigers need to sign a better kicker. Any ideas?

Staunton is a fine kicker, but he did pick up a knock early second half, and played through it. Missed a relatively easy kick as a result.
Billy goes through hot and cold patches, but can strike from a long way out. Will improve.
No need to panic buy.

Re: Do Tigers need better goalkickers?
Staunton is a very good kicker and billy is very inexperienced no need to buy anyone in to kick.
Re: Do Tigers need better goalkickers?
What we need is not to get into a situation where a certain person does not get any game time for weeks on end and is then bought on with 2/3 minutes go and is then expected to kick the winning goal.
Cockers gets a lot of things right but his handling of 12T and his timing substitutions in general has been woeful IMO.

Nowadays referees decide matches, players by how much.

Staunton is a very good kicker and BT is still developing,
Under pressure in the big games BT is lacking a bit of experience but that will grow in games like this when a win is dependent on his kick,
We still have one if the best if not the best no. 10 in the AP and when flood is away with England or injured we still have an excellent kicker for him to be replaced by, do we all expect to have 3 world class players in every position, just in case...the salary cap doesn't allow for it

We couldn’t get much better than Staunton and Flood tbh, always going to have a problem getting a third choice fly half more game time.

There are not many good fly halfs available at the moment. Tigers have one International in Floody and would be paying a heavy salary for another quality Fly half with international pedigree.
Staunton is solid and has been reliable in most of the games even if we have not played champagne rugby.
I trust Cockers with his recuitment!!

Re: Do Tigers need better goalkickers?
Billy's kicking has improved immensely but it was a big ask for him to come on with two minutes to go and save us. If he had pulled it off we would have been singing his praises. Staunton is a steady Eddie and may not be as exciting as Toby Flood but he does his job well. Let's stick with what we have - missed kicks aren't the only reason we lost today

Current England Flyhalf and goalkicker, how much better do you want?
Of course this is my own opinion and other posters may have a different perceived factual viewpoint.
Re: Do Tigers need better goalkickers?
The goalkicking didn't lose us the game - penalties against did.
Staunton has won games for us this season by his accurate kicking, at a time when we have scored few tries.
Yesterday he had a knock which clearly affected him, and arguably should have come off earlier as a result, allowing 12T to bed in.
However, Billy is not as quick a decision maker as Jezza, and with the speed with which Sarries closed us down would have been very vulnerable to turning over/not releasing etc., the ball. I would suspect this is why Cockers kept Staunton on, even in spite of his 2 poorly struck kicks. I believe he should have stayed on until the end, although the prospect of a long range penalty conversion by Billy must have been in Cockers mind. Unfortunately.

Technically Tigers have two international fly halves, as of course Staunton has 5 caps for Ireland. Solid, dependable, affordable, and just what we need. Sadly, as has been mentioned, he took a bit of a nasty knock early in the second half.Tigerbeat wrote:There are not many good fly halfs available at the moment. A shame to lose like that yesterday, but these things happen. Neither kicker can be blamed. If you lose because you've missed a kick or two, then maybe the rest of the team should've "played better" and scored more points!

Well said but I am afraid it is too sensible and does not allow for senseless moaning.Hot_Charlie wrote:Technically Tigers have two international fly halves, as of course Staunton has 5 caps for Ireland. Couldnt agree more !
First kick by 36 and its a tough call unless you've been there. We lost the game by not making the most of other opportunities not by missing one kick. If thats the argument then Staunton's conversion miss cost us the match.
All that matters is that we get to the final and win it.

Hambo :- He was with England when he was injured, but he was a Tigers player, our player. He is still our player.”

If it hadn't been for 36's first kick - the superbly struck penalty from our own half to touch - the resulting penalty from the lineout may have been even more challenging...rocktop51 wrote: First kick by 36 and its a tough call unless you've been there.
