Fishing is my main hobby, though I do garden(fruit and veg only).Bit of photography, especially wildlife, spoilt up here in Scotland, plus hill walking.
Used to fly a falcon and did partake in classic car ownership for a while.

Being in recruitment, it often makes us laugh how people go to great lengths to create a superb image of themselves on their CV and then blow it at the very end under Hobbies. It is SO prejudicial.

How do clients view it?

Rugby, football, tennis, jogging, going to the gym, weight training, mountaineering, anything to do with sport and keeping fit.... = Good. A healthy person with a bit about them.

Playing any kind of musical instrument for pleasure or gain. = Great. Talented, dilligent, maybe even creative.

But then we get:

"Spending time with my two lovely daughters who are the best things in the world." = Vomit. Smug b*st*rd.
"Socialising with my friends." = Airhead.
"Playing Computer Games." = Re-apply when you've grown up. Actually, don't.
"Member of the something church of the blessed something." = No way, they'd never cope with this office / pub / shop / building site.
"Building my own PC." = Oh no, not one of those.
"Re-enacting historic battles, member of a classic car club, chairman of "The Prisoner" Appreciation Society, local area rep for CAMRA, member of the East Wessex Narrow Boat Society, founder member of the Bilge End To :censored: Steam Engine Restoration Society......" = A bore with a tedious range of flat hats, wastecoats and colourful scarves.
"Reading up on all the latest developments in IT" = Oh my God.

Trust me, you may be as interesting as Stephen Fry and as funny as Paul Merton, but be damned careful what you put under hobbies or people will assume you're a boring obsessive nutter. Sport is always the safest bet.

The pagan witch who like rock music could swing it either way!

Douglas Bader was given excellent advice - games, team games mostly!

I'd get you in for interview just to see what you were like!

Apropos jobs.

I once advertised for an admin person in the Nottingham Evening Post and got 120 replies.

There were about 10 fabulous CVs (like girls who had left the 6th form with terrific A Levels but didn't want to go yo Uni), 60 others that were pretty good to average, and 50 rubbish ones.

Amongst them was a lady who simply wrote me a letter. It was beautifully hand-written on nice paper, and explained that she wouldn't send a CV because it would end up in the shredder, but if I met her, I would want to employ her. I called her and she still wouldn't tell me about her career to date. Very clever, and so, of course, I invited her in for interview.

She metaphorically lit up the entire office when she arrived. She was bright, charming, friendly, and funny.

In the interview she explained that she'd been a hairdresser ever since she left school at 16 (she was now 36), and had never done anything else. She now wanted to do something different, but realised that her CV would do her no favours at all.

Unfortunately for me, she used the same tactic in applying for some other jobs, and she got quite a few offers higher than the one I made her.

Kinoulton - Steam trains and canals - that is right down my OH street !! We have done the canal holiday bit- several times and we have been on steam trains quite a bit. He went to see Tornado the other week - that was a bit beyond me as it was a new steam train not an old one.

I'm researching my family tree at the moment, so that's my biggest hobby outside of rugby. I've only really done the American side so far, obviously making the most of living here at the moment, and being able to access the records.

I'll get cracking on the English side when I move back home to Leicester in June.

Hobbies have taken a bit of a back seat for me at the moment, as I'm in my senior year in high school, and I have a lot on my plate with my studies (I need to make sure I get the grades to secure my place at Uni of Leicester!) and because as I'm senior class president.

ChicagoTiger doing my family tree is something that I have often thought of doing several times. Have you found out anything interesting.
